2009 Season - Jungnickel and Reich share MVP award

Junior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and senior Bridget Reich (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) were the co-winners of the Most Valuable Player award for the Augustana volleyball team in 2009.

Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was the offensive ringleader. She pounded out 424 kills in 109 games for an average of 3.89 per game. She hit at a .234 clip for the season with 424 kills and 170 errors in 1,085 total attempts. She also led the team in service aces with 52 (0.48 per game) and was second in digs with 409 (3.75 per game). Jungnickel led the CCIW in service aces and was second in kills.

Although she still has one year left in her career, Jungnickel etched her name in the top 10 career categories three times. She is currently third in service aces with 157 and she is eighth in both kills (1,065) and digs (1,180). Her average of 3.89 kills per game in 2009 is the third highest ever recorded in the history of Augustana volleyball while she is fifth in single season service aces per game (0.48).

Jungnickel earned second team all-conference honors and she was named to the all-tournament team in three different tournaments throughout the season (UW-Oshkosh Invitational, Grinnell Tournament and Illinois Wesleyan Invitational). Skeens was named to the all-tournament team in the Grinnell Tournament and the Mabel Lee Invitational in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Reich’s success this past season was remarkable as she underwent knee surgery last spring and only played in the second half of the 2009 campaign. She served as team captain and saw action in a total of 45 gifts. She posted 67 kills for an average of 1.49 per game. She also had 13 setting assists, nine service aces, 37 digs and 20 total blocks (three solos and 17 assists).

Sophomore Katie Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.) was the winner of the Most Improved Player award and the Augie Award went to a pair of freshmen. Defensive specialist Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) won it at the varsity level and Sarah Williams (Rockford Lutheran HS, Rockford, Ill.) was the recipient for the junior varsity.

Second year head coach Janelle Hester’ had a team that had just three seniors and a junior with the rest of the playing time being split between freshmen and sophomores. Predictably, there were some ups and downs as the Vikings finished the year 11-21 overall and 2-5 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.

A killer schedule didn’t help, especially in the early going of the campaign. In the first eight matches the Vikings faced three teams (Hope, Washington and Wisconsin-Oshkosh) that would end the season in the NCAA Division III Final Four. Before the season was 13 matches old Hester’s team would face one team that was ranked as high as third in NCAA Division III (Carthage) and another squad (St. Ambrose) that would qualify for the NAIA national tournament.
