New program to aid transfer students
Augustana College is pleased to announce "Transitioning to Augustana," a new program to help college students transfer to Augustana. The initiative offers transferring students increased scholarships and a team of knowledgeable advisors who will guide them through the process and introduce them to the opportunities waiting for them at Augustana, a nationally respected private liberal arts college.
The new merit scholarship awards offer transfer students up to $12,000 per year based on their previous academic successes. Members of the honor society, Phi Theta Kappa may also receive an additional $3,000 Phi Theta Kapp award. The scholarships are renewable depending on grade-point average and would be part of a financial aid package that may include local, state and federal funding.
"We recognize that economic pressures or family commitments may require students to choose a different institution, initially," says Kent Barnds, vice president of enrollment and communication. "However, when they want to make a change, we want Augustana to be their first choice."
Transfer students find a variety of new advantages on campus, including the opportunity for a peak learning experience out of the classroom. After one year at Augustana, students can apply to participate in Augie Choice. The program offers students up to $2,000 to fund an internship, international study or faculty-mentored research project.
"Augie Choice offers students the opportunity to apply their learning in a high-impact, real-world experience," says Jeff Abernathy, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college. "The experiential learning complements and strengthens their knowledge base and gives them an edge for their future career path."
Transitioning to Augustana includes a transfer support team that will review students' transcripts; guide them through applying for merit scholarships and other financial aid; connect them with one of the special faculty advisors in the most popular majors among more than 60 academic programs; and talk with them about life as a student at Augustana.
