2009-2010 Season - Nykaza places sixth at Wartburg Invitational
Junior Matt Nykaza (Brother Rice HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) was the lone placewinner for Augustana at the Dick Walker Knights Invitational, which was held in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, December 12 at Wartburg College.
Nykaza placed sixth in the 184 pound weight class as the Vikings scored 28.5 points to finish ninth in the tournament.
Nykaza lost his opening round match by a score of 8-0 to Vinny Capanile of Ellsworth, who was the fourth seed. He then defeated Andrew Roberts of Cornell and pinned Kyle Ullery of Trine University in just 1:05. Nykaza then fell to Ben Scott of Wartburg 6-0 and in the fifth place match he was pinned by Campanile in 3:26.
Junior Alec Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) won a match at 149 pounds when he pinned Tyler Lymburner of Trine at 3:00 in the consolation bracket. Senior Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) won his first round match in the 157 pound bracket when he beat Elliot Carlson of Coe 12-2. He also won a match in the wrestle-backs when he defeated eighth seeded Zach Enrico of Augsburg 7-5.
The Vikings had two wrestlers win matches at 165 pounds. Freshman Ian Knepshield (Shady Side Academy, Ford City, Pennsylvania) posted two victories in the consolation bracket. He pinned Andrew Lattner of Coe at 5:48 and beat eighth seeded Spencer Flodeen of Augsburg 6-4. Sophomore Matt McIntyre (West Carroll HS, Savanna, Ill.) beat Art Sanchez of Iowa Lakes 16-4, also in the wrestle backs.
Freshman Alex Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) advanced to the semi finals at 174 pounds. He opened the tournament with a 4-3 win over Kyle Campbell of Grandview and then pinned Garrett Hepker of Cornell at 5:59 before being pinned by second seeded Carrington Banks of Wartburg at 4:57 in the semi finals.
