2009-2010 Season - Vikings never trail in win over Webster
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – For the second straight game, the Augustana women’s basketball teamed jumped out to a quick lead, this time never trailing in a 60-50 win over Webster on Saturday, November 28 in the home opener in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings led 24-15 at intermission and held off the Gorloks down the stretch to earn the team’s second win in a row. The Blue & Gold are now 2-2 overall.
Senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) and sophomore Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) combined for eight straight points to open the game, helping the home squad take an 8-4 edge early in the contest. Junior Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) and sophomore Elizabeth Phillips (Grayslake North HS, Lake Villa, Ill.) each connected on a jumper to extend the lead to 12-4 as Augustana gained control of the action.
Webster started to work its way back into the game and cut the Viking lead to 15-9 on a pair of free throws by Ayrica Lockett, who led the visitors with 13 points. Augustana responded with an 8-0 run, stretching the advantage to 23-9 at the 6:48 mark of the opening half. Freshman Dori Gills (Holy Family HS, Boulder, Colo.) paced the streak with jumpers on consecutive possessions for the Vikings. A final 6-1 rally by the Gorloks cut the deficit to 24-15 heading into the locker room.
Augustana led by at least seven points for most of the second half until Webster made its final rally attempt of the afternoon. The Gorloks climbed within four points of the lead at 50-46 with 2:55 to play, but steady free throw shooting for the Vikings in the closing minutes proved to be the difference.
Freshman Kristin Warnken (Centaurus HS, Erie, Colo.) hit a pair of charity tosses with 2:40 to play to push the lead to 52-46. She knocked down another pair at the 1:53 mark, increasing the Viking edge to 54-46. After a Webster basket, Kernich connected on both of her free throw attempts to push the lead back to eight and end the final threat from the Gorloks. Augustana made 10-12 free throws in the final 2:40 to salt away the win.
Fox led the Vikings with 20 points, including 9-10 from the free throw line. She was second on the team with five rebounds and added a pair of assists. Runge snared 10 rebounds and was also in double figures with 12 points. Sophomore Lani Kasten (German Valley HS, Forreston, Ill.) contributed a game high six steals.
Augustana shot 50.0 percent (17-34) from the floor and made 68.6 percent (24-25) free throws. The Vikings edged Webster 33-32 on the glass and forced 22 Gorlok turnovers.
