2009-2010 Season - Vavra takes fourth at Concordia Open
MEQUON, Wisconsin – Freshman Alejandro Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) led the way for the Augustana wrestling team on Saturday, November 21. The Vikings competed in the Concordia Open in Mequon, Wisconsin and Vavra came away with a fourth place finish in the 174 pound weight class.
Vavra went 5-2 in the tournament to up his season’s record to 12-6 overall after three tournaments. He opened up the action on Saturday with a pin of Josh Nord of Concordia at 4:05 and then beat Taylor Trim of North Central 6-4 in the quarter finals. In the semi-finals Vavra ran up against second seeded Chris Karl of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and fell 3-2. That dropped him into the wrestle-back bracket and he immediately responded with a 3-2 win over third seeded Justin Tomal of Wheaton. He then beat Gabe Watson of Wabash 3-2 and advanced to third place match with a forfeit victory over fourth seeded Matt Fetterley of Muskegon. In the third place match Vavra, who was seeded seventh, lost to fifth seeded Cory Zuberbier of Wisconsin-Platteville 8-6.
While Vavra was the lone Viking to pick up a place, several of head coach Eric Juergens’ charges turned in tremendous outings. Senior Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) went 4-2 at 157 pounds and freshman Tyler Dempsey (Grant HS, Ingleside, Ill.) was 3-2 at the same weight class.
Freshman Steve Poffenberger (Allegan HS, Paw Paw, Mich.) was 2-2 at 133 and fellow freshman Cody Heche (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) was 2-2 at 174. Sophomore Matt McIntyre (West Carroll HS, Savanna, Ill.) finished 2-2 at 165.
In all, nine of the Augustana wrestlers won at least one match against some very good competition.
