2009-2010 Season - Late surge keys Augustana's win over Piedmont

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A late surge in the second half propelled the Augustana women’s basketball team to its first win of the season on Saturday, November 21 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The Vikings trailed 56-45 with less than 12 minutes to play before rallying for a 68-65 victory over Piedmont.  The Blue & Gold improve to 1-2 overall.

Augustana opened the game on fire, racing out to a 23-4 advantage in the first eight and a half minutes of action.  Sophomore Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) scored six of her game high 20 points during the stretch.  Sophomore Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) also added a pair of three point field goals as the Vikings quickly took control of the game.

Trailing by 19, Piedmont started a rally of its own, cutting the deficit to single digits at 29-22 after back-to-back three point baskets with 5:44 remaining in the first half.  Piedmont continued its run, eventually tying the game at 33-33 with 1:00 minute left and edging out in front 34-33 at the break.

The game was knotted at 40-40 early into the second half before Piedmont started to pull ahead.  The Vikings were outscored 13-3 over the next four and a half minutes, falling behind 53-43 with 12:03 remaining.  The lead eventually grew to 11 points before Augustana made its stretch run to earn the come from behind victory. 

Senior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) keyed the Viking streak with a pair of three point shots.  Freshman Kristin Warnken (Centaurus HS, Erie, Colo.) added a three point field goal of her own during the run and the game was deadlocked 58-58 with 4:40 to play.

Warnken hit another three point bucket with 2:36 to play to put the Vikings in front to stay 63-62.  Runge and Fox combined to make five free throws down the stretch to push the lead to 68-62 before a Piedmont three point basket with three seconds remaining finished off the scoring for the night.

Runge shot 5-11 from the floor and also knocked down 10-14 free throws.  She also led both teams with nine rebounds, helping the Blue & Gold finish the contest with a commanding 44-28 advantage on the glass.  Fox was also in double figures with 12 points, and sophomore Lani Kasten (German Valley HS, Forreston, Ill.) grabbed eight rebounds.  Warnken knocked down a trio of three pointers, finishing with nine points.

Amber Satterfield led Piedmont with 18 points.  Mandy Beasley was also in double figures with 11 points.
