2009-2010 Season - Augustana men edge Monmouth in swimming
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A pair of first place finishes by freshman Chris Greaves (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) helped Augustana edge Monmouth by a 114-105 score on Friday, November 20 at the Carver Center Pool in Rock Island, Illinois. Greaves won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.48 and came back later in the meet to take home the title in the 100 freestyle with a clocking of :50.14.
Junior Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), senior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.), and freshman Marcus Julian (Lake Park HS, Itasca, Ill.) were all individual event winners for the Blue & Gold. Clinton claimed top honors in the 100 butterfly (:57.90), Zike held off a pair of Monmouth swimmers for a win in the 100 backstroke (1:00.17), and Julian cruised to a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.65). Zike, Julian, Clinton joined together with senior Kyle Waller (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) to finis first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.88.
Freshman Jon Hill (Hersey HS, Prospect, Ill.) turned in a solid showing with a runner-up finish in the 1000 freestyle (11:43.96) and a third place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:43.61). Freshman Eric Pease (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) added a pair of top-three showings by taking third in the 200 individual medley (2:16.24) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.89).
Waller and Zike finished second and third in the 50 freestyle, with times of :23.65 and :24.15 respectively. Sophomore Robert Flynn (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) grabbed the second spot in the one meter diving event with a score of 113.30. Senior Jacob Glimco (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) was third in the 1000 freestyle (12:06.93) and sophomore Kevin Cialdella (Tinley Park HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.76).
Greaves, Clinton, Julian, and Will Danay closed out the evening with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet completed the race in 1:33.86, finishing less than half a second behind the Fighting Scots.
