2009-2010 Season - 2009-10 Women's Golf Fall Review

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s golf team completed its fall season with a seventh place showing at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships.  The Vikings shot a team score of 780 at the event, which was held at Highland Park Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois.

Freshman Megan Vandersee (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) led the team with a scoring average of 90.8 during the fall season.  She shot a total of 908 in 10 rounds on the course.  Vandersee had one top-five finish and placed in the top 10 at five of the eight meets.  Her best performance came at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational where she shot an 82 and finished in a tie for third place in a 33 player field.  The round of 82 was Vandersee’s best round and was also the low round for the entire team.  She also tied for sixth in a 45 player field at the season opening Augustana Quadrangular and finished tied for ninth in a 67 player field at the North Central Cardinal Classic.  Vandersee placed in a tie for 10th out of 53 golfers at the Augustana Fall Classic and earned a 10th place finish in a field of 62 golfers at the St. Ambrose Classic.  She finished third for the Vikings and 25th overall at the CCIW Championship Meet at the end of the fall season.

Sophomore Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) was second on the team with a scoring average of 91.6, firing 916 shots in 10 rounds of action.  Carr had three top-ten finishes, including a score of 86 and a seventh place showing at the Augustana Fall Classic.  She also finished in a tie for ninth at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational with a score of 88 and tied for 10th with a round of 91 at the Augustana Quadrangular.  Carr’s low round of the fall came at the St. Ambrose Classic, where she fired an opening round 85 on her way to tying for 11th place.  She was the No. 2 golfer for the Blue & Gold at the CCIW Championship Meet, finishing in a tie for 26th place.

Freshman Morgan Wilkinson (Westmont HS, Westmont, Ill.) had a scoring average of 92.4 in the fall, third best on the squad.  She hit 924 shots in 10 rounds of play.  Wilkinson’s lowest finish was a tie for 15th at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, where she fired a 91.  She also tied for 17th at the St. Ambrose Classic with a two round total of 178.  Wilkinson ended the fall season on a strong note, leading the Vikings with a 25th place individual performance at the CCIW Championship Meet.

Junior Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) turned in a scoring average of 97.4, totaling 877 shots in nine rounds of action.  Her best score was a 92 in the second round of the St. Ambrose Classic, where she finished in a tie for 24th place.  Berens earned a tie for 34th place at the CCIW Championship Meet as Augustana’s No. 4 golfer. 

Senior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) had a scoring average of 98.7.  She made 987 shots in 10 rounds on the course.  Mascheri’s low round came in the first round of the St. Ambrose Classic where she shot an 88.  She went on to place 20th at the event.

Senior Elizabeth Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) took 926 shots in nine rounds of play, compiling a 102.9 scoring average.  Her best round was a 93 at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational where she finished in a tie for 19th place.

Junior Courtney VandeWiele (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) played five rounds and took 591 shots, finishing with a 118.2 scoring average.  She shot a 108 at the Augustana Fall Classic to finish in a tie for 46th place.

Head coach Ron Standley’s Vikings competed in eight events this fall, finishing third out of seven teams at the Augustana Quadrangular and fourth at the Augustana Fall Classic, Iowa Wesleyan Invitational, and St. Ambrose Classic. The Vikings were also fifth at the North Central Cardinal Classic, eighth out of 15 teams at the Monmouth Invitational, and 10th out of 17 teams at the Illinois College Invitational.  Standley led the squad to an overall mark of 41-20 this fall.
