2009-2010 Season - Viking men's swimmers fall to Grinnell
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) took home titles in the 100 and 200 backstroke races to lead the Viking effort against Grinnell, but Augustana fell 204-87 to the Pioneers on Saturday, November 14 at the Carver Center pool in Rock Island, Illinois. Freshmen Marcus Julian (Lake Park HS, Itasca, Ill.) and Chris Greaves (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) also won individual races for the Blue & Gold.
Zike won the 100 backstroke with a time of :59.33. His time of 2:13.22 in the 200 backstroke was also good enough for a top finish. Julian raced past the field in a time of 1:04.86 to secure a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke. Greaves took the 200 butterfly in 2:13.74.
Zike also contributed to a pair of second place relay teams. He led off the 400 medley relay team and was joined by Julian, Greaves, and junior Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.). The foursome completed the race in 3:54.33. Zike, senior Kyle Waller (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.), Greaves, and junior Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) combined for a time of 3:31.86 in the 400 freestyle relay. Augustana’s other runner-up showing came from Greaves, who finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.34.
Five Vikings picked up third place finishes in individual events. Freshman Jon Hill (Hersey HS, Prospect, Ill.) placed third in the 1000 freestyle (12:01.85) and freshman Eric Pease (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.04). Waller finished third in the 50 freestyle (:23.93), Julian grabbed the third spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.66), and Waldorf took third in the 100 butterfly (1:00.97).
