Augustana College 2009 report card

For nearly 150 years, Augustana College has challenged and prepared students for meaningful lives of civic engagement, integrative thinking, global awareness, ethical action, and creative and critical problem-solving. The year 2009 has been no exception.

Successes of the past year include:

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) The NSSE has shown excellent results for Augustana within key educational practices, with improved levels of academic challenge for first-year students suggesting the beneficial impact of AGES, our first-year liberal studies program.
International study participation We’ve reached a milestone in international study: 40 percent of our
students studying abroad.
Senior Inquiry implementation Ninety-seven percent of our academic departments have implemented Senior Inquiry, the capstone experience for Augustana students.
New majors
The faculty has adopted six new majors: African studies, anthropology, engineering physics, environmental studies, international business, and multimedia journalism and mass communcation.
Women’s soccer
CCIW championship
Our women’s soccer team captured the CCIW championship and capped an unprecedented season by hosting the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 sectionals.
2009 William V. Campbell Trophy finalist, Blaine Westemeyer Senior offensive tackle Blaine Westemeyer, winner of an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship by the National Football Foundation, is one of just 16 finalists for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, recognizing the best college football scholar-athlete in the nation.
New varsity sport,
women’s lacrosse
The college has added women’s lacrosse to its varsity roster, and now offers 22 varsity sports: 11 each for men and women.
Growth in the Greek system We welcomed a more robust Greek system this year when more than 40 men reinstated Rho Nu Delta and more than 50 women reactivated Chi Omega Gamma.
2009 Outstanding Program
Series Award
CUBOM received the 2009 Outstanding Program Series Award for the Emerge Leadership Program, a fast-paced training series for first-year students to network and develop new leadership skills.
2009 Outstanding Multicultural Programming Award The Multicultural Programming Board received the 2009 Outstanding Multicultural Programming Award for Honest Conversations, a program
in which students gather to celebrate differences and engage in tough questions about each others’ cultures, practices and perspectives.
Student volunteers Augustana’s 2009 Senior Survey reported 84 percent of graduating seniors had volunteered or done community service while in college.
New sustainability efforts Augustana students have proven themselves leaders in the college’s newest sustainability efforts, running Augie Acres and working on our Farm2Fork program.
MAP funding legislation Nearly 500 of our students—and many of their families—participated in the efforts to ensure the recent success of the Monetary Award Program (MAP) funding legislation in Illinois.
Progress of Authentically Augustana: A Call to Action We have surpassed the $100 million mark in our comprehensive campaign, with a significant portion of the funds being committed to student scholarships.
Giving to The Augustana Fund During the 2008-09 fiscal year, alumni donors contributed an astounding $1.4 million to The Augustana Fund, providing far-reaching benefits to the academic program and student life.
