2009-2010 Season - Gogonas takes third at Loras Open
Senior George Gogonas (Bowie HS, El Paso, Texas) turned in the best showing for the Augustana Vikings at the season opening Loras Open. The non-scoring tournament was held in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, November 7 at Loras College and Gogonas placed third in the 125 pound weight class. He was the only one of third year head coach Eric Juergens’ wrestlers to earn a place in the day-long competition.
Gogonas started things off with a 14-6 win over Jeff Ohnemus of Waldorf in the first round and then won by medical default over Clayton Rush of Coe in the second round. In the semi-final Gogonas fell to Grant Sutton of Northern Iowa by a narrow 9-7 margin. In the wrestleback bracket he beat Terrance Young of Northern Iowa by default and then took care of Pat Pfantz of Loras 8-4 in the third place match.
A pair of freshmen: Tyler Dempsey (Grant HS, Ingleside, Illinois) and Alejandro Vavra (Gull Lake HS, Dowling, Mich.) each won two matches before being eliminated. Dempsey competed at 157 pounds while Vavra was at 174 pounds. Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Cicero, Ill.), Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa), Matt Burns (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), Hunter Feraco (Gull Lake HS, Battle Creek, Mich.), Tyler Hernandez (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Cody Heche (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) were all victorious in one match.
