2009 Season - Trio named to academic all-district football team

Three Augustana College football players were named to the ESPN – The Magazine academic all-district team, it was announced today. Senior offensive tackle Blaine Westemeyer (Blue Valley Northwest HS, Overland Park, Kansas) was a first team selection while senior linebacker Eric Meyer (Harlem HS, Machesney Park, Ill.) and junior running back Robert Wood (Rockford Boylan HS, Loves Park, Ill.) were both named to the second team. The voting was done by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Consider) and Westemeyer, Meyer and Wood were selected in District Five, which takes in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Because he was named on the first team, Westemeyer will now be advanced to the national ballot where he will get a chance to repeat his first team Academic All-American honor of a year ago. He was recently named one of just 16 players nationwide, and one of only two in NCAA Division III, to receive an $18,000.00 postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation.

He was named to the American Football Coaches Association All-American team in 2008 as a junior and he was a consensus NCAA Division III pre-season All-American. A two time first team all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, Westemeyer is a four year starter at offensive tackle and serves as team captain this season. He is a biochemistry major and sports a glossy 3.93 grade point average. He has also been nominated for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and the Gagliardi Award, which goes to the outstanding player in NCAA Division III.

Meyer was a second team all-district selection last year as well. He is currently fourth on the team in tackles with 46 (24 solo and 22 assists) and had one tackle for loss and one pass interception. He is a Spanish and international business major and carries a 3.60 grade point average.

Wood leads the Vikings in rushing with 581 yards on 112 attempts for a 5.2 average per carry and an 83.0 average per game. He has scored a team high seven touchdowns and leads Augustana in scoring with 42 points. He has also caught four passes for 32 yards. Wood is a biology major with a 3.89 grade point average.

Augustana has long been a leader on the Academic All-American scene, which has been sponsored by CoSIDA since 1952. The Vikings have produced 130 Academic All-Americans down through the years and that ranks Augustana sixth on the all-time list, regardless of division. In the NCAA Division III standings, the Vikings trail only Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
