2009 Season - Tie at Millikin earns CCIW tournament berth

In a match that saw 35 fouls called and nine yellow cards issued, Sean Fidlow’s (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) goal with 13:33 left gave Augustana a 1-1 tie with Millikin in the team’s regular season finale Sunday in Decatur. The Vikings finish the regular season with a 6-9-3 overall record and a mark of 3-2-2 in CCIW play. Millikin is now 5-13-2 overall and finish 0-6-1 in the conference.

Matt Laude’s seventh goal of the season on an assist from David Wakefield gave the Big Blue a 1-0 lead nearly 35 minutes into the match. Fidlow’s second goal of the season, on a feed from Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) tied the game late in the second half. Neither team was able to find the net through the final 13 and a half minutes of regulation play or in either overtime session, resulting in the 1-1 final.

The Vikings held a 22-15 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) was credited with two saves while his Big Blue counterpart Derrek Schwartz recorded five.

The 1-1 deadlock was good enough for Augustana to secure a tie for fourth place in the CCIW with North Park. By virtue of its 2-0 win over NPU on October 10, the team earns the fourth and final berth in the CCIW tournament and now hits the road to face league champ Elmhurst (12-3-3; 5-0-2) in a 7:00 pm. semifinal match on Wednesday, November 4.
