2009 Season - Four freshmen in top seven at CCIW meet
The fact that the Augustana women’s cross country team is very young was clearly evident on Saturday, October 31 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship. The Vikings finished sixth in the team standings and four of the team’s top seven runner were freshmen. North Central won the team title with 48 points while Augustana scored 138 in the meet, which was held at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst, Illinois. Wheaton was second with 49 while Illinois Wesleyan took third with 69. Elmhurst (84) and Carthage (122) finished ahead of the Vikings while North Park (238) and Millikin (239) took seventh and eighth, respectively.
The first three runners across the line for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s Vikings were freshmen. Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) was the top finisher for Augustana as she placed 15th with a time of 24:46 while Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) was 24th in 25:05 and Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) took 27th in 25:15. Kerry Devitt of Illinois Wesleyan was the individual champion as she covered the 6,000 meter layout in 23:16.
Senior Ellen Adams (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) placed 35th in 26:04 with junior Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) finishing 37th in 26:16. Freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) took 40th in 26:27 and junior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) was 41st in 26:31.
Augustana will be off this week before participating in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday, November 14 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
