2009 Season - 10th ranked Vikings take second in CCIW
Senior Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) finished in the top 10 and freshman Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was named “Freshman of the Year” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men’s cross country championship. The meet was held on Saturday, October 31 at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst, Illinois. Augustana, ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, placed second in the team standings, finishing with 54 points. Top ranked North Central won the team title with a perfect score of 15 points as the Cardinals claimed the first nine places over the 8,000 meter course.
Zook was the first non-North Central runner to cross the finish line as he placed 10th with a time of 27:20.6. Smith was right behind Zook with an 11th place time of 27:26.0. After the meet Smith was named the “Freshman of the Year” in the CCIW.
Junior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Elburn, Ill.) took 13th in 27:34.4 while senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) was 14th in 27:36.6. Sophomore Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) finished 16th in 27:49.1 and junior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) took 17th in 27:50.7. Senior Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) was the seventh man as he placed 18th in 27:56.3.
Sean Carlson of North Central won the individual title with a time of 26:34. Behind North Central and Augustana, Wheaton was third with 91 points while Illinois Wesleyan was fourth with 116. Carthage (153), Elmhurst (161), North Park (198) and Millikin (246) rounded out the field.
The Vikings will be off next week before participating in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday, November 14 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
