2009 Season - Vikings fall to Aurora in OT
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Kyle Haumersen’s goal 6:08 into the first overtime period gave the Aurora Spartans a 2-1 victory over Augustana Thursday at Ericson Field. The loss, in the Vikings’ regular season home finale, drops the team to 6-9-2 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Augustana got on the board first when freshman Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) eight minutes into the second half. The assist was Fidlow’s team-high fourth of the year.
The Spartans answered three and a half minutes later with a goal by Mike Emma on a penalty kick. The goal was Emma’s eighth of the season, tying him for the team lead.
Haumersen’s goal on a loose ball following a corner kick ended the contest in the first overtime period.
Aurora outshot Augustana 15-12, with the Vikings holding an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Augustana goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) recorded seven saves, including five in the first half.
The Vikings, who currently stand at 3-2-1 in the CCIW, close out the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. contest Sunday, November 1 against Millikin in Decatur, Illinois.
