2009 Season - Women's soccer climbs to sixth nationally
A victory last week on the road at number three ranked Illinois Wesleyan propelled the Augustana women’s soccer team into heretofore uncharted territory for the program. Veteran head coach Scott Mejia’s Vikings have moved into the top 10 in two different national polls.
The 1-0 win over the Titans was the impetus for a jump all the way to sixth in the NCAA Division III rankings according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Prior to last week, Augustana was ranked 22 nd in the NSCAA poll. The Vikings also claimed the number one spot in the NCAA Division III Central Region ranking, according to the NSCAA.
All season long the Blue & Gold has been inching upward in the D3soccer.com poll and this week moved into 10 th. Last week Augustana was 17 th in the D3soccer.com ranking but the win at Illinois Wesleyan helped fuel the seven spot leap in the rankings.
The Vikings are currently 14-1-1 overall and will play two critical College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matches this week. They will travel to Naperville, Illinois on Wednesday, October 28 for a contest against North Central at 7:00 p.m. and then will host Elmhurst on Saturday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Ericson Field. Augustana has never won a CCIW title in women’s soccer and will need wins in both matches to clinch an outright crown.
