Please join a campus-wide Friday Conversation on our Augie Reads program Friday, November 20, 2009 in the College Center Board Room (refreshments are served at 3:30; conversation will begin at 4:00). We'll be talking about how the program has evolved and its future: what we'd like to achieve through Augie Reads and how our current program is --or is not-- fulfilling those objectives. In particular, the Augie Reads Committee would like to talk about how to better build community through literature and literacy.
If you're new to Augustana or not familiar with the program, Augie Reads presents an opportunity for the Augustana College community to come together to explore a common text and the issues that surround it. (This year, the Augie Reads book was Barack Obama's Dreams from My Father). All first-year students receive a copy of the text before they come to campus; the book is discussed both in small group discussion during Fall Connection, and as an integral part of students' LSFY 101 classes. Faculty, staff, administrators, and Board members also receive a copy of the book.
All members of the community are invited to participate in this discussion.
Council of Independent Colleges Announces Seminar Series
Teaching Pre-modern European Art in Context
This week-long seminar is for full-time faculty members who regularly teach art history at CIC member institutions. The 2010 seminar, "Artistic Workshop Practices of Late Medieval and Renaissance Italy" will be held at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Birmingham, Alabama July 26-30, 2010. There is no seminar fee for faculty members selected to participate. Lodging and soome meals will be covered. Participants will be expected to cover the cost of transportation to the seminar. The selection process is based on nominations by chief academic officers, not direct application by faculty members. Up to 25 full-time faculty members will be selected. Illinois Sociological Association Annual Meeting's
Undergraduate Paper Competition Winners

The top two winners of the 2009 Illinois Sociological Association Undergraduate Paper Competition were announced at The Illinois Sociological Association's annual meeting November 7-8, 2009 and are Augustana College students, who submitted their capstone seminar papers. In both cases this was independent original research first theorized in SOCI 350 with Dr. Paul Croll and actually accomplished and analyzed in SOCI 420 with Dr. Marsha Smith. The papers were judged by an outside reader who had no knowledge of who wrote papers or from what schools the entrants were attending. In total, 12 undergraduate papers were submitted from 5 different schools.
The first place winner was Dana Swanson, who wrote "From the Supermarket to the Bedroom: The Great American Consumer". The judge commented: "This was an insightful analysis of the relationship between consumer habits and the influence consumption has on approaches to romantic relationships. A well conceived and developed research paper."
The second place winner was Josh Morgan who wrote: "To act or not to act: Evaluating social participation habits among college students". The judge commented: "This paper concludes that college-age students are prone to conform to social trends if their self esteem is positively correlated to availability of social support. The analysis has strong potential for developing a longitudinal study to further investigate these relationships."
