2009 Season - Coverick's second leads way at SAU Invite

Freshman Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.), who has been splitting her duties between cross country and soccer this fall, turned in an outstanding performance on Saturday, October 24. Coverick placed second individually at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, Iowa. She covered the 5,000 meter course in a time of 20:30, losing only to the winning time of 20:07 turned in by Stephanie Lucas of Illinois Institute of Technology.

Brooke Ashcraft of St. Ambrose was third in 20:39 and Victoria Castaneda of Sauk Valley placed fourth in 20:42. There was a mix-up on the course and all the finishers after Castaneda ran 5,400 meters instead of the 5,000 meters that the top four runners completed.

Augustana placed second in the team standings in the seven-team field with 51 points. Illinois Institute of Technology won the event with just 28 points as the Scarlet Hawks put five runners in the top 10. St. Ambrose was third with 63 and Sauk Valley took fourth with 86. The Bee Track Club finished fifth with 153 while Clarke and Iowa Wesleyan did not field complete teams.

Senior Samantha Pancamo (Wauconda HS, Wauconda, Ill.) was the second Augustana finisher as she was 10th over the 5,400 meter portion of the course with a time of 23:39. Freshman Kirstillyn Pohlman (Zion Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) took 12th in 23:58. Senior Kristin Sattizahn (Erie HS, Erie, Ill.) placed 13th in 24:04 and freshman Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was 14th in 24:08.

Freshman Emily Byars (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) took 20th in 24:33 and freshman Chassidy Mangers (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was the seventh finisher for the Vikings. She was 22nd in 24:39.

Augustana, under the direction of veteran head coach Fred Whiteside, will compete in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on Saturday, October 31 at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst, Illinois.
