2009 Season - Dodds goal keys win at number three IWU
Sophomore Jessica Dodds (Linn-Mar HS, Marion, Iowa) scored the only goal of the game late in the first half and it was enough as Augustana defeated Illinois Wesleyan 1-0 on the Saturday, October 24. The key College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matchup featured two teams ranked in the top 20 of the latest NCAA Division III women’s soccer poll by D3soccer.com.
Coming into the game Scott Mejia’s Vikings were ranked 17th while Illinois Wesleyan, which was undefeated prior to Saturday, was rated third.
Dodds scored on an assist by sophomore Ashley Higuchi (Smoky Hill HS, Aurora, Colo.) and it came with less than three minutes (42:20) to play in the first half. It was Dodds third goal of the season.
The game was a defensive struggle as there were only 10 shots in the entire 90 minute contest. Illinois Wesleyan had a 7-3 advantage in shots taken and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Augustana goalkeeper Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, Ill.) recorded three saves and picked up her 11th save of the year.
The Vikings improved to 14-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the CCIW while Illinois Wesleyan fell to 14-1-2 and 4-1-0. Augustana will face two crucial league games this week, traveling to North Central on Wednesday, October 28 and then hosting Elmhurst on Saturday, October 31. The Vikings need one more victory to clinch at least a share of their first ever conference championship.
