2009 Season - Senior Day Ends in Tie
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana’s men’s soccer team celebrated “Senior Day” Saturday at Ericson Field by hosting the Illinois Wesleyan Titans. Each team scored midway through the first half, but neither could find the net the rest of the way and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
A nice run and unassisted goal by Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.)--his third of the season--put the Vikings on top just under 28 minutes in, but IWU bounced back four minutes later with a goal on a header by Kyle Gorgol off Robert Tabaka’s free kick.
The match was as evenly played as the score would indicate. Augustana outshot IWU by a thin 15-13 margin and each team was awarded four corner kicks. The Vikings held a 3-1 advantage in shots during the extra periods. Augustana goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) recorded six saves in the contest while his Titan counterpart, Win Fisher, was credited with nine.
In addition to Stanley and Dolan, the team honored seven other seniors prior to the game. John Linden (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Jonathan Woo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.), Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.), Dave Shrigley (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Nik Galounis (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.), and Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) were all playing their next-to-last game and final CCIW contest at Ericson Field.
The Vikings will next be in action on October 27 at Pella, Iowa, where they’ll meet Central College in a 3:00 p.m. match. They’ll follow that with a home contest against Aurora on October 29 at 4:00 p.m.
