Senior John Linden (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) scored a pair of goals to lead Augustana to a 4-2 non-conference victory over Knox on Wednesday, October 21 in Galesburg, Illinois. Linden, the leading scorer on the Vikings with five goals and three assists for 13 total points, tallied the second and fourth goals in the game.
Augustana struck quickly as senior Andrew Stanley (Loves Park Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) scored with the game less than five minutes old. He was assisted on the play by freshman Kevin Wyrostek (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.). Linden scored unassisted at 13:06 to make it 2-0 and that is the way the scored stayed heading into halftime.
In the second half senior Jonathan Woo (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored with an assist going to freshman Victory Mensink (Lyceum Sancta Maria HS, Amsterdam, The Netherlands).
Knox climbed back into the game with two goals about two minutes apart. Donald Tscoypa scored unassisted at 58:15 and then Jeff Wozencraft converted on a penalty kick at 60:35.
With the game now 3-2 and more than 30 minutes left to play, the Vikings got some breathing room when Linden drilled home a penalty kick at 77:27.
Augustana held a huge advantage in shot attempted, winning that statistic 25-6, including a 17-1 edge in the first half. Knox goalkeeper Max Miller made 12 saves in the contest.
Augustana is now 6-7-1 on the season while Knox is 3-13. At one time this year head coach Brenton Joseph’s Vikings were 3-6 but they have gone 3-1-1 over the last five matches. They will play a home match against College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opponent Illinois Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at Ericson Field.
