Birthday Bash in honor of John Hauberg's 140th

Black Hawk Hiking Club will lead a walk through the Park at 12:30pm before the celebration (meet at the statue of Black Hawk at the State Historic Site 1510 46^th Ave. Rock Island, Illinois)

Augustana Special Collections Librarian, Jamie Nelson, and emeritus professor and Black Hawk Hiking Club member Mel Peterson will be representatives among an array of organizations at the 140^th Birthday Celebration of John Hauberg at the Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island. Open to the public and free-of-charge, the celebration will highlight John and Susanne Hauberg's philanthropy and lasting community contributions. Cake and beverages will be served, a new exhibit on the historic village of Saukenuk will be unveiled in the Hauberg Museum, a short play about John Hauberg will be performed and representatives from many Hauberg-founded community organizations will host interactive booths. John Hauberg's community service included Augustana as well; he served on the board of directors of Augustana College and Theological Seminary for 37 years!

Felix Mendelssohn's skills as a composer, conductor, writer and producer had far reaching effects on the musical world still felt today. But his posthumous reputation is also fascinating for what it reveals about the changing times during the two centuries that followed his brief life of 38 years. Felix Mendelssohn wrote music that was lionized during his day, silenced for reasons having nothing to do with its intrinsic worth after his death, and is now garnering new appreciation in our time. Come celebrate the composer's 200th birthday and hear some music as well with Dr. Deborah Dakin, adjunct instructor of viola and music appreiciation.

Oral Presentation Assistance

Are you requiring students to give presentations at the end of the term? Do you have students who need extra help in preparing for these assignments? The members of Lambda Pi Eta, the national honorary association in communication studies, are offering preparation assistance to students who have speeches and other kinds of presentations. They can help students in organizing material and creating effective visual aids, and will listen to students practice their speeches and offer feedback. LPE members are available on Tuesday and Thursday during weeks 9 & 10 (Oct. 20, 22, 27 & 29) from 10:30 AM-12:20 PM and from 7-9 PM. Congratulations to our Librarians!

At its October meeting, the Augustana Board of Trustees approved the promotion of five librarians to assistant professor: Connie Ghinazzi, Jamie Nelson, Margi Rogal, Mary Tatro and Carla Tracy.

Seven Students Accepted into Augustana College-University of Illinois Veterinary Coordinated Degree Program
Baccalaureate/Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (B.A./D.V.M.)

Augustana College and the College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Illinois offer a unique combined liberal arts and sciences curriculum leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The pre-professional part of this curriculum is completed in three or four years at Augustana College and the professional part in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Urbana-Champaign.

Darrin Good travelled to Urbana on October 22^nd with seven students who recently applied to this program.

All seven interviewed brilliantly and were accepted! Please be sure to congratulate these fine young women.

Due to the success of our alumni in vet school, Augustana College has developed an agreement with the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. Highly qualified students are accepted into this coordinated degree program at the beginning of their sophomore year. This is not only an early admission program, but also a 3-4 program. This means that students can enter the vet school after their third year here. Then, following their first year of vet school, they return to graduate with their friends at Augustana earning the bachelor's degree. This allows some of our students to become vets in seven years instead of the typical eight years (4+4). Students in this program are not required to take the entrance exam for vet schools, the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). If a student wishes to remain for their senior year at Augustana, the vet school at Illinois will reserve a spot for them in the following class. This is NOT only for Illinois residents; rather students at Augustana from ANY state in the country are eligible. We have had 14 students accepted into this program in the past four years.

Augustana College provides an exceptional preparation for students wishing to become vets.

In the past five years, Augustana has had an acceptance rate into vet schools of 81% (compared to a national average of about 35%).
Since 2000, Augustana has had students attend nine different schools of veterinary medicine (and acceptances to even more).
