Greetings from the Center for Teaching & Learning.
I recently came across the article "Learning Self-Evaluation: Challenges for Students" by Jean MacGregor in the journal New Directions for Teaching and Learning (56). I wanted to share with you some of the points she makes.
Some of the challenges students may face when they are asked to self-evaluate and reflect on themselves as learners, especially for the first time, include:
- an unfamiliarity with looking inward at the learning process;
- a lack of confidence in describing their own learning;
- difficulty in making judgments about their work;
- discomfort in discussing academic difficulties;
- confusion about multiple audiences and purposes;
- cultural discomfort with self-evaluation;
- emotional turbulence beyond the scope of the academic work.
Given these and other challenges, MacGregor makes the following suggestions for those interested in fostering reflection and self-evaluation on the part of their students:
- set the context and rationale for ongoing reflective practices;
- integrate reflective work throughout the course;
- engage students in collaborative learning projects;
- clarify the purpose and audience for more formal self-evaluations;
- tailor your responses to self-evaluations to support student development.
Of course she elaborates on each of these points in her article; I encourage you to take a look. The entire article is available as a pdf on the ACTL moodle site:

In the meantime, I hope the term finishes well for you!
