2009 Season - Men's soccer falls to North Central
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Things looked good for the Augustana men’s soccer team when Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) teamed up for a beautiful goal less than four minutes into Saturday night’s match with North Central. However that would be the high point of the night for the Vikings as North Central came back to garner a 2-1 win.
The initial goal by Augustana featured some fancy footwork from Wallner on the left side before he sent a perfect centering pass to Stanley who buried the shot to give the Vikings the lead 3:43 in. North Central evened the score at the twenty minute mark. On a corner kick from the right side, Augustana was called for a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Cardinals’ top scorer Micah Melendrez. Melendrez beat Viking keeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) with the kick to even the score at 1-1.
The Cardinals got the game-winner 18½ minutes into the second half when Michael Curtis put in a header off of a rebound to make the score 2-1. Augustana amped up the pressure the rest of the way and was rewarded with a handful of scoring opportunities, but the Vikings were unable to find the net.
Augustana outshot North Central 14-6 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Cardinal goalkeeper Phillip Klipp came up big in the second half, collecting all three of his saves during that period.
The loss drops Augustana to 5-7-1 overall and 3-2 in CCIW play. North Central improves to 7-8-0 overall and 2-3 in conference action. The Viking men are back in action October 21 when they travel to Galesburg, Illinois to take on Knox in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
