2009 Season - Zook's fifth leads Vikings to third
Senior Chris Zook (Normal Community HS, Normal, Ill.) came through in a huge way at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday, October 17 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin. Competing in a field that was loaded with nationally and regionally ranked teams, Zook helped lead Augustana to an impressive third place team finish.
He covered the 8,000 meter course in 24:32 to place fifth individually; his second consecutive top five performance in an invitational. A week earlier he was third at the Wartburg Invitational and for that effort was named the “Runner of the Week” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. On Saturday he finished just 16 seconds behind the individual winner – Dan Greeno of Bethel – who ran a time of 24:15.6.
The Vikings scored 151 points in the 35-team meet. North Central, ranked first in NCAA Division III, won the team title with 22 points while Wisconsin-Stevens Point, rated seventh, placed second with 97 points. The Vikings finished seven points ahead of fourth place finisher Calvin, which had 158 points. Calvin is currently ranked 16th in the nation. Wisconsin-Oshkosh, rated 15th, was fifth with 168 points while Wisconsin-Whitewater, the 30th ranked team in the country, was sixth with 186.
Senior Dan Bailey (Deerfield HS, Deerfield, Ill.) was the second man for Augustana with a 21st place performance of 24:59. Sophomore Mike Tisza (Hersey HS, Prospect Heights, Ill.) placed 37th in 25:20 and senior Brian Hart (University City HS, St. Louis, Missouri) was 40th in 25:22. Freshman Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) placed 48th in 25:27 and was the fifth Viking finisher. Sophomore Billy TenBusch (Prairie Ridge HS, Cary, Ill.) took 63rd in 25:38 and Sean Carmody (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was 78th in 25:48.
Augustana will now have two weeks off before competing in the CCIW championship on Saturday, October 31 in Elmhurst, Illinois.
