2009 Season - Big jump to ninth in national ranking

An impressive performance at Wartburg’s Dan Huston Invitational on Saturday, October 10 page huge dividends in the NCAA Division III national ranking for the Augustana men’s cross country team. Veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s squad jump nine places, from 18 th to ninth, in the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association weekly poll, which was released today. The move into the top 10 comes on the strength of a first place finish at the 12-team Dan Huston Invitational in Waverly, Iowa. Included among the Vikings victims in that meet were Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Wisconsin-Platteville, teams that had been ranked third and ninth in the nation the previous week.

Augustana had flirted with the top 10 most of the year but a week ago fell all the way to 18 th despite not competing over the weekend of October 3. The Vikings had been 13 th heading into the off week. The nine place jump was the biggest by any NCAA Division III team last week. Southern Maine had a similar leap of eight places from 22 nd to 14 th. The Vikings will be tested once again this week at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on Saturday, October 17. The field will include several top 20 teams.

The NCAA Division III national poll continues to be dominated by teams in the Midwest Region with five of the top 10 teams representing the region. North Central (first), Wisconsin-LaCrosse (third), Wisconsin-Stevens Point (sixth), Augustana (ninth) and Wisconsin-Platteville (10 th) are all in the top 10. In addition, Wisconsin-Oshkosh (15 th), Wisconsin-Whitewater (30 th) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (35 th) are also in the national rankings.
