ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) fired a shot into the left corner of the goal past Wheaton goalkeeper Hillary Barreto with 1:33 left in the first overtime to give Augustana a 3-2 win over the Thunder Wednesday. The goal, Winkelman’s second of the game and fourth of the season, kept the 22nd-ranked Vikings undefeated in CCIW play at 4-0. The team is now a half game ahead of Illinois Wesleyan atop the league standings and is 12-1-1 overall. Wheaton, ranked 10th in the nation, falls to 11-3-0 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Vikings controlled the early part of the first half. Winkelman scored her first goal of the evening on a nice centering pass from Erin Coulson (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) to give Augustana a 1-0 lead just over 13 minutes in. Gradually, Wheaton began to assert itself and 28 minutes in Jamie Orewiler lofted a 20-yard kick over the head of Viking keeper Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, Ill.) to even the score at 1-1. Each team had a handful of scoring opportunities in the remainder of the half, but neither could take advantage and the teams went to the break tied 1-1.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Augustana’s Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was taken down in the box and took advantage by burying the penalty kick in the left corner of the goal to put the Vikings back on top 2-1. However, the Thunder bounced back just five minutes later when Orewiler scored her sixth goal of the season on a free kick from just outside the box to knot the score at 2-2 where it stayed for the remainder of regulation.
In the overtime, Augustana forced the issue and had a couple of excellent scoring opportunities before Winkelman finally ended the contest almost eight and a half minutes into the period.
In an extremely evenly-played contest, the Thunder outshot Augustana by a margin of 11 to 10 and each team had four corner kicks.
The win is just the second ever for the Vikings versus Wheaton in 21 matches. The only other Augustana win came in 2006 by a score of 2-1.
The Vikings are in action next on Sunday, October 18, when they’ll take on Westminster in a non-conference match at 5:00 p.m.
