2009 Season - Success continues with second place finish

Continuing with their recent surge, the Vikings took three of four matches to place second in the team standings at the Mabel Lee Volleyball Invitational on Friday and Saturday, October 9-10. Augustana, which at one time this season was 2-11, has won nine of its last 10 matches to claw within one game of .500 on the year. Second year head coach Janelle Hester’s team lost its opening match of the tournament to Wisconsin-River Falls by a score of 3-0 on Friday but rebounded to win three straight to close out with a 3-1 record.

The Vikings lost to the Falcons by scores of 25-23; 25-15; 25-23 but bounced back in the next match to defeat Fontbonne in a tight 3-2 contest. Augustana dropped the first set 25-22, won the second 25-10 and fell in the third by a score of 25-22. That set up the scenario where the Vikings had to win the next two and they did by the relatively wide margins of 25-15 and 15-5. On Saturday, Augustana defeated Dubuque 3-1 (25-19; 26-24; 20-25; 25-17) and Coe 3-1 (25-19; 25-15; 20-25; 25-23).

Over the weekend Hester welcomed back senior Bridget Reich (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), who had been sidelined after having knee surgery in the off-season. Reich started slowly, playing in just one game in the loss to Wisconsin-River Falls and recording just one kill. By tournament’s end, however, she had seen action in 13 games and had piled up 23 kills in 78 attempts with eight total blocks (two solo and six assists) with 10 digs and one service ace.
Augustana is now 11-12 overall heading into a key College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match on Tuesday, October 13 at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois.
