2009 Season - Hottle leads way at Dan Huston Invite

Junior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) led the way for Augustana at the Dan Huston Invitational on Saturday, October 10 in Waverly, Iowa. She placed 22nd with a time of 23:57 over the 6000 meter course that was laid out on the campus of Wartburg College. Hottle’s effort contributed to a seventh place team finish by the Vikings in the 11 team event, which featured some of the top cross country teams in the Midwest.

Wartburg, which was ranked 14th in the latest NCAA Division III national ranking, won the meet with 44 points. Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the ninth ranked team in the country, finished second with 68 points. Northern Iowa, an NCAA Division I team, placed third with 101. Carleton, ranked 18th in the nation, was fourth with 110. Simpson took fifth with 147 and Loras was sixth with 154. Although not ranked nationally, Simpson was 10th in the West Region and Loras was ninth prior to the meet.

Augustana scored 163 points to nail down seventh. The Vikings were followed by Wisconsin-Platteville (223), Cornell (253), Grinnell (256) and North Iowa Community (279).

Caedryn Schrunk of Northern Iowa won the individual race with a time of 21:59, defeating Anna Kraayenbrink of Wartburg by nine seconds.

Hottle was the top finisher for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team for just the second time this season. She won the Early Opener way back on September 1 at Credit Island in Davenport, Iowa. In this meet she finished seven seconds in front of her freshman teammate Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.). Bistry placed 26th with a time of 24:04. Senior Ellen Adams (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was 28th in 24:08.

The next two finishers for the Vikings were both freshmen. Sarabeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) took 42nd in 24:42 while Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) was 45th in 24:48. Senior Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) was 58th in 24:57 and junior Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) placed 62nd in 25:02.

Augustana will compete at the Tori Neubauer Invitational in LaCrosse, Wisconsin on Saturday, October 17.
