2009-2010 Season - Women's tennis in fourth after day one

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After the first day of competition in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's tennis tournament, Augustana is in fourth place. The Vikings of head coach Adam Strand have accumulated 18 points and have a chance to move up today. The event will conclude at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois.

Wheaton leads the meet with 42 points while Carthage is in second with 35. North Central currently holds down third place with 25 points while Augustana (18), Illinois Wesleyan (16), Elmhurst (4) and Millikin (2) occupy the rest of the spots.

The tournament will championship and third place matches in the singles flights as well as the conclusion of the doubles competition today. On Friday most of the singles play was completed while in doubles action only the first round of both the winner's and the playback brackets were finished.

Augustana has five of its six singles players in third place matches while in the doubles only the number three team advanced to the semi-final round.

Senior Jenna Richardson (Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) will play Gina Klein of Carthage for third place at number one singles. Richardson had a bye in the first round before losing to Elizabeth Worsowicz of Wheaton in the semi-finals by a score of 6-1; 6-3. She then beat Cory Schillerstrom of North Central 8-2 in the playback semi-finals to earn her way into the third place match.

In the number two flight senior Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) will square off against Alicia DeGrado of North Central for third place. Crawford beat Cassie Devore of Illinois Wesleyan 6-3; 6-2 in the first round before losing to Kayli Edwards of Wheaton 6-3 6-2 in the semi-finals. She picked up a default victory over Shannon Dale of Elmhurst in the playback semi-finals to make it to the third place match.

Junior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Allison Paschold of North Central will battle for third place at number four. Sapio had a bye in the first round and lost to Lindsey Hallett of Wheaton 6-0; 6-0 in the semi-finals. Her 8-4 victory over Cate Hunter of Illinois Wesleyan in the playback semi-finals placed her in the third place match.

Sophomore Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) will play Abigal Conover of North Central for third place at number five. Reece beat Michelle Carroll of Millikin 6-0; 6-0 in the first round and fell to Sara Federschmidt of Wheaton 6-2; 6-0 in the semi-finals. She beat Sarah Wilson of Illinois Wesleyan 8-5 in the playback semi-finals.

Freshman Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) will find herself matched against Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan for third place at number six singles. Panko had a bye in the first round and then lost 6-0; 6-0 to Kirsten Boyer of Wheaton in the semi-finals. She picked up an 8-2 win over Emily Tarlini of Elmhurst in the playback semi-finals.

The lone doubles team to win on Friday was the number three team of senior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and Reece. Doemland and Reece beat Sarah Wilson and Alissa Goetz of Illinois Wesleyan 6-4; 6-3 in the first round and will play the Wheaton team of Jill Casserly and Sara Federschmidt in the semi-finals.
