2009 Season - An historic first in win at Wheaton
Senior goal keeper Mike Dolan turned in an outstanding performance on Wednesday, October 7 in leading Augustana to a 1-0 win at Wheaton in men’s soccer. Freshman Nick Wolfe recorded the lone goal as he converted on an assist by John Linden early in the second half to account for the only score of the match.
Dolan recorded seven saves and helped the Vikings withstand a withering offensive attack by the 17th ranked Thunder. The victory was an historic one on many fronts for Augustana. It was the first ever victory for the Vikings at Wheaton, ending a drought of 16 straight trips to Joe Bean (formerly East McCully) Field. When Wolfe scored at the 50:54 mark of the match, it was the first Augustana goal at Wheaton since the 1997 season.
Wheaton held a mammoth 22-3 advantage in shots, including a 15-1 margin in the second half. The lone shot for the Vikings in the final 45 minutes was the one that Wolfe converted into his goal. Wheaton took 13 corner kicks while Augustana did not have a single one.
Dolan made six of his seven saves in the second half, including two in the final five minutes of play.
The Vikings and the Thunder have played 30 times in men’s soccer and Augustana has managed just two victories against 24 losses with four of the matches ending in ties. With the win, head coach Brenton Joseph’s team now moves to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Wheaton falls to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Augustana will host North Park on Saturday, October 10 at 3:00 p.m. at Ericson Field.
