2009 Season - Road loss snaps unbeaten streak at 11
Two quick goals proved to be too much to overcome as Carroll defeated 19th ranked Augustana 2-1 in non-conference soccer action on Tuesday evening in Waukesha, Wisconsin. It was the first loss of the season for the Vikings, who are now 10-1-1 overall. Carroll moved to 8-1-1 on the year.
Liz Melcher struck first for the Pioneers, scoring her fifth goal of the season just 11:06 into the match with an assist going to Kaitlin Roy. Kelley Morris added to the Carroll lead at 23:56 when she scored on a corner kick. It was the fourth goal of the year for Morris.
Down 2-0 at halftime, the Vikings scored early in the second half when senior Kati Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) tallied less than four minutes (48:47) into the action. She was assisted on the play by Taylor Moesle (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.). With the score 2-1, Augustana had two shots in the final three minutes but Carroll goalkeeper Ashlee Reinke made a save on Erin Coulson’s (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) attempt at 87:36 and then stopped Oakes’ shot with just :38 left to preserve the victory.
Statistically things were fairly even in this game with each team taking 11 shots but the Vikings held the advantage in the second half by a margin of 9-4. Carroll launched four corner kicks and Augustana had three.
Augustana will play at North Park on Saturday, October 10 at 5:00 p.m.
