Jennifer Burnham (Geography) and three students represented Augustana at the Midstates Consortium for Math and Science Campus Sustainability Workshop at St. Olaf College October 2-4th. Students Dana Swanson, Rob Liva, and Jaron Gaier gave a presentation on "Local Culture at Augustana" highlighting the work of the environmental LC (Mahaffey and Peters) at Wesley Acres and Augie Acres.
On October 2nd, Peter Kivisto, Sociology, gave the keynote address at the joint meeting of the Sociologists of Minnesota and the Wisconsin Sociological Association, held at Inver Hills Community College in Inver Grove Heights, MN. His talk, "Addicted to Cheap Labor," offered an analysis of why the U.S. has not been able to pass immigration reform legislation that both meets the legitimate labor needs of the nation and offers immigrants fair and just terms of incorporation into American society.
Jamie Nelson (Special Collections) was re-appointed to the Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board (ISHRAB) by Jesse White, the Illinois Secretary of State, for a term ending in 2012. The ISHRAB is the state-level arm of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a federal funding agency that supports the preservation of and access to archival materials. The Illinois State Historical Records Advisory Board's main activities are to review NHPRC grant proposals submitted by Illinois archival repositories, and to facilitate communication and cooperation among historical records agencies in the state. Members of the ISHRAB serve concurrently on the advisory board for the Illinois State Archives in Springfield.
