2009-2010 Season - Vikings split final fall matches
INDIANOLA & PELLA, Iowa – The Augustana women’s tennis team finished its fall portion of the regular season with a split against Simpson and Central on Saturday, October 3. The Vikings defeated Simpson 9-0 in Indianola, Iowa before falling 7-2 to Central in Pella, Iowa. The Blue & Gold are now 6-9 overall and remain 2-4 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin heading into the CCIW Tournament this upcoming weekend.
Against the Storm, Augustana quickly took control of the match with a doubles sweep and never looked back. Junior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and freshman Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) were (8-0) winner at No. 2 doubles over Allison Anderson and Lindsay Nash. Seniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) followed with an (8-3) win at No. 1 doubles against Tiffany Bost and Mikayla Struebing to make it 2-0. Senior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and freshman Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) pulled out an (8-6) decision against Lynae Gruber and Meagen Kirts at No. 3 doubles to push the lead to 3-0.
The Vikings swept all six singles matches, only dropping one set along the way. Richardson won (6-1, 6-0) over Bost at No. 1 singles and Crawford beat Struebing (6-1, 6-3) at No. 2 singles. Doemland was a (6-0, 6-2) winner against Gruber at No. 3 singles, and Sapio defeated Anderson (6-4, 6-0) at No. 4 singles. Panko breezed past Kirts (6-0, 6-0) at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) pulled out a (6-1, 2-6, (10-1)) victory over Nash at No. 5 singles to finish the 9-0 sweep.
Augustana also started strong in doubles against the Dutch, winning a pair of close matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Richardson and Crawford defeated Faith Bliss and Kayla Donner (8-6) at No. 1 doubles and Doemland and Reece beat Emily Swartz and Trinh Le (8-6) at No. 3 doubles. Sapio and Panko lost (8-6) to Sara Dale and Stephanie Gibbons at No. 2 doubles.
Central won matches in straight sets at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 to take a 4-2 lead, but the final three matches all went into third set super tie-breakers. The Vikings were close in all three matches, but failed to pick up another win as the Dutch earned a 7-2 victory. Richardson fell (4-6, 7-6, (10-7) to Dale at No. 1 singles. Crawford dropped a (6-4, 4-6, (10-5)) decision to Bliss at No. 2 singles. Panko lost (2-6, 7-5 (10-8)) at No. 6 singles.
