Augustana College is committed to provide the campus community with information relevant to issues of concern or issues which might impact the safety or sense of security of community members. This commitment must, of course, be balanced with the need for open expression of ideas which is the foundation of collegiate study. Allegations or questions about possible criminal acts, discrimination, or harassment should be reported to any of the following:

Public Safety (ext. 7711); Dean of Students (ext. 7533); Compliance Officer / Associate Dean of the College (ext. 7328); Chair of Diversity Initiatives Committee (ext. 7362); Director of Multicultural Services (ext. 8275)

First-hand information is required for posting. Such acts violate the spirit of the Augustana community and will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

Description:  A male student reported that his X-Box, three controllers and 15 games totaling $1,500.00 were missing from his residence.

Description: A male student reported that when returning from an off-campus party, he was approached from behind by a male wearing blue jeans and a tan hoodie. After taking the student's backpack, the perpetrator fled the scene. 

 

Action Taken: Both Rock Island Police and Campus Security were contacted and responded. Police report was filed. This is all the information available to us at this time.

Location: 36th Street and 12th Avenue

Description: Augustana College received a report from a female student that as she was walking past a male suspect, he grabbed her hair and struck her twice in the face. After kicking the perpetrator, she was able to break away and flee to Swanson Commons. The suspect was wearing blue jeans, a dark hooded sweat shirt, and a flat bill hat under his hood.

Action Taken: Public Safety and the Rock Island Police were contacted and responded. No additional information is available at this time.

Description: Houses were broken into and a variety of items were taken. 

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police Department continues to investigate. Please take appropriate safety precautions and report any suspicious activity to the Rock Island Police Department followed by Public Safety.

Description: While conducting  a routine check of the TLA houses, Public Safety discovered someone had broken into the Freya House through the rear door. 

Action Taken: Public Safety notified the Rock Island Police to assist with a house search. Although no one was found on the premises, desk drawers were open, and it appears two TV's and an X-Box were stolen. Public Safety followed-up with Freya House residents and contacted Facilities to secure the rear door.

Description: A male student reported that someone had broken into his off-campus residence. The perpetrator forced open the front door and stole a new X-Box.

Description: A female student reported that she witnessed a male subject attempting to open a window on the west side of the apartment. As the perpetrator became aware that he was observed by the student, he fled the scene. The suspect was approximately 5'6, wearing a blue/gray hooded jacket.

Action Taken: Public Safety and the Rock Island Police were notified and responded.

Description: While conducting a perimeter check from the previous larceny report, Public Safety and the RIPD noticed that a ground window of Arbaugh 9 had been damaged. Upon further investigation, they found that two 24" and 31" Vizio televisions were stolen from a female resident's apartment.

Action Taken: Public Safety contacted facilities to replace the damaged window and ensured that all apartments in the area were secure. This is all the information available to us at this time. If the perpetrator is apprehended, the campus will be notified.

Description: A staff member reported that his 1998 four door Dodge Neon was stolen while parked along 38th Street. 

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police were contacted and a Police report was filed. The RIPD were able to recover the vehicle after the perpetrator was observed driving the Neon near the campus area.

This email is to notify students that the $500 REWARD has been increased to a $1000 REWARD for information which assists in determining the person or persons responsible for this act of vandalism.

Description: Augustana College was notified that the marble memorial bench in front of the library was vandalized.
 

Action Taken: Public Safety and the Rock Island Police were notified and are currently investigating the incident. No additional information is available at this time.   This email is to notify students of a $500 REWARD for information which assists in determining the person or persons responsible for this act of vandalism. Students with information regarding possible responsible parties are asked to contact Dean Mark Anderson at 104 Founders Hall without delay. An appointment can be scheduled by calling 794-7502. Any information which leads to the arrest of those responsible for this vandalism will be considered eligible for the reward. Sources of information will not be revealed without the consent of the person providing information.

Location: Near 32nd Street and 12th Avenue

Description: A concerned neighbor shared with Public Safety she observed a suspicious individual attempting to gain entry in vehicles parked in Lot L. The subject was not wearing a shirt and riding a red bicycle. Additionally, she shared that she notified the Rock Island Police regarding the incident.

Action Taken: Public Safety identified a subject matching the description of the perpetrator. The officer questioned the subject who denied responsibility of the incident. This is all the information available to us at this time. Please remember to secure your vehicles and property when unattended.

Full Description: Public Safety pursued two suspicious juveniles wearing bookbags through the lower quad area. After contacted the RIPD for assistance, one of the perpetrators was apprehended in front of the Forseti house and the other in Lincoln Park. Public Safety along with the RIPD recovered a number of personal items belonging to Augustana students involved with 'Shantytown' from the subjects.

Action Taken: The RIPD arrested the juveniles for theft. This is all the information available to us at this time.

Location: Centennial Hall

Description: A female student reported that as she and other students were setting up for a show in Centennial Hall, a suspicious intoxicated male subject entered the building and joined them on the stage area.

Action Taken: Augustana Security along with RIPD responded and escorted the subject out of Centennial Hall. RIPD issued the suspect a Criminal Trespass Notice and made him aware he could not return to Augustana College. The RIPD then escorted the subject off campus. This is all the information available to us at this time.

Location: 34th Street & 8th Avenue &Bartholomew Lot J

Description: Campus Security was notified that two cars parked at 34th Street and 8th Avenue and at Bartholomew Lot J were vandalized. The passenger rear view mirrors were damaged.

Action Taken: The RIPD was contacted and a report filed after first incident. Security advised the student to file a report with the RIPD after the second incident. This is all the information available to us at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified.

Location: 10th Avenue  

Description: A female student reported that as she and her friends were walking eastbound on 10th Avenue, they noticed a suspicious subject in a smaller SUV parked along the street masturbating. When the students past, the exhibitionist headed back towards 30th street. 

Action Taken: Campus Security was contacted and responded. The RIPD was notified and is reaching out to the student for a statement. This is all the information available to us at this time.  

Due to the onset of Spring and it's nice weather, on campus suspicious behavior may increase. Description: An unknown caller reported that two suspicious males were tampering with cars parked in the PepsiCo parking Lot. 

Action Taken: Augustana Security along with RIPD responded and apprehended two juveniles. Nothing was stolen and no cars appeared to be vandalized. This is all the information available to us at this time.

Location: Swanson N1 Parking Lot

Description: Two student's vehicles parking in the Lot N1 had windows broken out. A Tom Tom GPS device was removed from one of the vehicles.

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police and Campus Security were notified and a police report was filed. As officers approached, two subjects were observed fleeing the area. Police were unable to apprehend the subjects and no further information is available at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified.

Description: A student reported that she left her cell phone on a lower level Pepsico table by the doors. Upon her return, the phone was gone. The black Verizon Droid phone was in a purple hard case.

Description: A student left his black Performance 26" 16-speed bicycle locked in the Westerlin bike rack on 10/29/10.  He returned on 10/30/10 and found the bicycle and lock missing.

Action Taken: Campus Security was notified and responded.  This is all the information available to us at this time.

Description: A Westerlin female student allowed entry for an older African American male. The subject was wearing worn pajamas and a winter coat. Students reported to Residential Life Staff that the subject was interacting with them and watching TV in the lounge.

Action Taken: Both RIPD & Campus Security were contacted and responded. Perpetrator was taken into custody by RIPD and transported to RI County jail.

Description: Two female students reported that a subject standing across the street made lewd remarks toward them.

Description: Female students observed a grey beard, older white male, yelling and making obscene gestures in his vehicle. The subject was wearing a golf cap and driving a red four door sedan.

Action Taken: Augustana Security was contacted and responded.

Location: Off-campus, near 33rd Street & 7 ½ Avenue

Description: A neighbor living next door to an off-campus house of Augustana students witnessed a suspicious person looking into their back window. When told to move, the individual ran south from the house. The suspect was a white male with blond hair, 5'8, wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and black rim glasses.

Action Taken: Rock Island Police were contacted and responded.  Augustana Security also responded.

Description: Female student reported that when returning from an off-campus party, she was assaulted near the top of the Olin stairs by a male wearing blue jeans and a black hoodie with white circle design on the front. No other descriptors available.  The student was pushed to the ground and the male was in the process of removing her leggings when she kicked herself free. The male ran towards 7th Avenue.

Action Taken: Both Rock Island Police and Campus Security were contacted and responded. Police report was filed. Incident under investigation.

Description: Three female students reported that they thought they noticed an individual looking into a Westerlin window.

Action Taken: Augustana Security and RIPD responded and apprehended a male African-American juvenile on the north side of Westerlin. He was charged with a curfew violation, given a no-trespass notice for the Augustana campus and removed from campus by RIPD. This is all the information available to us at this time.

Description: There were 3 reports of a suspicious male on or near the perimeter of campus. 

Action Taken: RIPD talked with the person after the third report and confirmed that he was not engaged in any behaviors of concern to the Augustana Community. He proceeded to an off-campus location.

Description: A female student reported that she noticed an African American male following her. When she confronted the individual, he fled the scene.

Description: A female student reported that an African American male was outside her room looking in the window. No distinguishing features were observed of the perpetrator due to him immediately fleeing the scene.
 
Action Taken: Security responded and found no additional damage or evidence. Augustana College and RIPD implemented new strategies to increase the security of the campus.
 
Please be aware that Willy Hearn III, was released and is no longer in jail - against the wishes of Augustana College and RIPD. We have expressed our serious concern and dissappointment to City Officials.

Description: A female student reported that a male was looking through her bedroom window.

Description: A vehicle parked in Seminary Lot B was vandalized. The driver's rear view mirror was damaged.

Location: Art Studio

Description: A student attending pottery class in the Pottery Shop, placed her purse in a common area away from the pottery wheels. During the class her purse was stolen. Her purse contained 2 rings (valued at $200), her cell phone, driver's license, student ID, keys, and debit/credit cards.

Action Taken: Student filed theft report with Augustana Security.


Update: Suspicious Person Arrest

The Rock Island Police Department has arrested a suspect in the recent cases of someone looking in the windows and entering homes in the neighborhoods surrounding Augustana College. The arrest happened Monday morning, September 6, 2010. The Augustana community is asked to continue to observe the following safety precautions.

Location: 28th Street near 7th Avenue

Full Description: This is one of several sightings of a male observed near off-campus houses, often seen looking into house windows. On this occasion, the suspect was wearing a mustard yellow hoodie.

Action Taken: Suspect was observed by a Rock Island Police Officer who pursued him along with other officers. The suspect was able to elude the police. IF YOU ENCOUNTER PERSONS ACTING IN A SUSPICIOUS MANNER, OR LOOKING INTO WINDOWS, DO NOT CONFRONT THEM. DO CALL 911 for police assistance. A follow-up call to Campus Security (794-7711) is recommended.

 Description: Two incidents of vandalism of cars parked on 34th Street. In both cases, the driver's side rear view mirror was broken off the car.

Action Taken: Rock Island Police were informed. Students are again reminded to immediately report suspicious behavior or observed criminal activity to 911, then to Augustana Campus Security at 7711.

Description: A student's car was broken into through the passenger side window. The center console was ripped open and a silver iPod and iPod charger were taken.

Action Taken: The student victim flagged down a Rock Island Police car, as well as an Augustana Security car as both passed by. Police attempted to lift fingerprints, but were not successful.  This is all the information we have available to us at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified.

Description: A male student was walking home when "jumped" by 3 males unknown to him. They were identified as two black males and one white male. After the altercation the 3 males fled the scene.

Action Taken: Campus Security was called and a report was filed. Student declined medical treatment as well as filing a police report.

Description: Passenger's side window of parked car broken out by a brick. A Garamond brand G.P.S. was removed from the vehicle. Loss valued at $180+. 

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police were called to the scene, and are investigating. Security ran car plates, and has identified and informed owners of the vandalism.




  Vandalism of Vehicles

Description: While on a routine patrol, Campus Security observed four parked cars with side-view mirrors vandalized. 

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police were called to the scene, and are investigating. Security ran car plates, and has identified and informed owners of the vandalism.





  Battery

Location: 10th Avenue near Westerlin Center

Description: A female student walked past a tall white male. The male then turned, ran back, and grabbed the female student's buttocks. The male then ran from the scene. The male was approximately 19 years old, and wore a large blue winter coat with a hood pulled over his face and head. The victim goes not think the perpetrator was a student.

Action Taken: Campus Security was notified.


 Battery

Time Occurred: 5:45 a.m.; later related incident 10:20 p.m.
Location: Near 30th Street and 5th Avenue; later incident near Library & Olin

Description: At each location and time, Augustana students were physically assaulted. At the first incident, the victim was assaulted by a group of four males in early 20's, one white and three black, all unknown to him. Seven stitches were required to close a cut on the victim's face. During the second incident, four black males passed the victim and his friends, and one began punching the victim. A tooth was chipped in the altercation.

Action Taken: When the second incident was reported, Rock Island Police responded in force (5 squad cars) and apprehended a black non-student male who was subsequently identified by students as responsible for the 10:20 p.m. battery. It now appears that the same person may have been responsible for the 5:45 a.m. battery. An arrest was made and the suspect jailed. Police continue to investigate.


 Sexual Assault

Location: An off-campus house on 6th Avenue 

Description: A female student was at a crowded party when restrained from behind by a person not visible to her. This person used his free hand to commit sexual battery, then rejoined the party crowd before an identification could be made.

Action Taken: The assault was reported to Residential Life staff who then contacted Campus Security. The victim indicated she did not wish to file a formal report with the Rock Island Police.

Description: A female student reported to the Rock Island Police that she was sexually assaulted in her residence hall room by a male student.

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police are investigating the alleged assault and have released no information at this time. 


Campus Incident Report: Theft

Location: Practice room in Bergendoff Hall

Description: A student left his iPod unattended in a practice room for a short time. When he returned, the iPod was missing. The iPod is a Black Classic 120gb valued at $250.

Action Taken: Campus Security was contacted and reporting information is being collected.


Vehicle Theft

Location: Vehicle was parked on 11th Avenue near Lot N1 (38th Street)

Description: A student parked his black 1999 Honda Accord,  IL Plate G60 6049, overnight and returned to find it missing. The vehicle was locked.

Action Taken: Security was advised, and checked with RIPD to be sure the car had not been towed for some reason. The Rock Island Police are investigating the theft.







Robbery and Battery

Location: 10th Avenue and 34th Street

 Description: A group of four or more male Augustana students intimidated another male student unknown to them and took a bag of chips and $5 cash from him. The group then proceeded to a house on 6th Avenue near 34th Street where one member struck another student without cause.

Action Taken: Campus Security, the Rock Island Police Department, and the Dean of Students Office have investigated and both the Police and the College have issued charges which are currently being processed.




Campus Incident Report: Burglary

Location: Parkander Townhouses

Description: A student left his room window open while absent. When he approached his room, he heard a noise inside.  When he opened the door, he observed a subject half-way in the room window. The subject fled. The window screen had been cut to allow entry.

Action Taken: The Rock Island Police and Campus Security were called to the scene, and applicable reports made. Police searched the area for suspicious persons, but found no one.

STUDENTS LIVING IN FIRST FLOOR ROOMS SHOULD KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED IF THEY ARE NOT PRESENT IN THE ROOM OR ARE SLEEPING. Please always contact Campus Security if suspicious persons or activities are observed.




Theft

 Description: A student left her room unattended and unlocked due to misplaced keys and a replacement key that did not work. In her short absence, her Hewlett Packard laptop model DV4-1322 was stolen from the room. The victim's roommate later found that her wallet and her webcam had also been taken from the room.

Action Taken: Rock Island Police and Campus Security were notified and Police are investigating. A REWARD HAS BEEN OFFERED FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE RECOVERY OF PROPERTY TAKEN DURING THIS THEFT AND/OR APPREHENSION OF THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE.


Vandalism of vehicles

Location: 38th Street near Andreen, and at the intersection of 39th Street and 8th Avenue

Description: Four parked cars had windows broken by BB or pellet gunfire. One car also had a side-view mirror vandalized.

Action Taken: A total of 16 cars have been vandalized by a BB or pellet gun over the past several days. The Rock Island Argus newspaper has an article in the 9-18-09 edition requesting anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (309)762-9500. Campus Security and city police continue to watch for possible perpetrators. This is all the information available to us at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified.




Vandalism of vehicles

Description: Approximately 10 parked vehicles in the area delineated above had windows shot out by a BB or pellet gun. Cars belonged to students and non-students.

  Sexual Assault

Description: An Augustana student has reported being sexually assaulted by a non-student male known to her.

Action Taken: A report has been made to the Dean of Students Office and to the Rock Island Police.


Campus Incident Report: Attempted theft of bicycles

Date: August 24, 2009

Time: 11 p.m.

Location: Erickson Center and later at 1200 35th Street

Description: Two male African Americans, one wearing a white t-shirt and the second wearing a black t-shirt, were observed at two locations using a hammer to break bicycle locks for the obvious purpose of theft. An Augustana student initiated the report as a result of observing one attempted theft from his residence hall room window.

Action Taken: Security was dispatched to the area, observed subjects matching the description attempting to free a second bicycle, and radioed for RIPD assistance. The Rock Island Police attempted to apprehend the suspects, but they were able to evade the officers. PLEASE NOTE: The early report of a theft in progress helped officers respond in a timely manner. Students are urged to follow this example, and to report to Campus Security or Police suspicious persons or activities they may observe.

Location: North side of Naeseth 4 Townhouse

Description: Student locked her bicycle to a fire escape railing, and returned to find the bicycle and lock missing. Bicycle was Schwinn Trailway Hybrid, light blue, 15-speed woman's bicycle.

Action Taken: Campus Security was informed. Student is in process of obtaining bicycle serial number to assist in identification. Rock Island Police will be contacted when the serial number is available for their report. This is all the information available to us at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified. UPDATE: The stolen bicycle was recovered by an Augustana grounds crew worker who found it in a wooded area of the campus.


Campus Incident Report: Theft from vehicle

Date: August 20/21, 2009

Time: Unknown

Location: Lot N2, 11th Avenue at 37th Street, south of Swanson Commons

Description: Driver's side window of parked car broken out by a brick. CD's and a silver case iPod were taken from the car. Loss valued at $350+

Action Taken: Campus Security was informed, and Rock Island Police were contacted to file a report. Security inspected the contiguous lots, but found no other cars vandalized. This is all the information available to us at this time. If the perpetrator(s) are apprehended the campus will be notified. UPDATED:Two juveniles were apprehended later in the morning breaking into cars in another part of town. The iPod was recovered when juveniles were apprehended by the Rock Island Police Department. Both perpetrators are now incarcerated at a juvenile detention facility in Galesburg, IL.

Campus Incident Report: Burglary

Location: First floor Immanuel Hall, Westerlin Center

Full Description: Two rooms on 1st floor Immanuel reported the theft of

a)      an Xbox 360, 4 controllers, and a Modern Warfare II game;

b)      a PlayStation. It is uncertain if room doors were locked, but one room may have been entered through the window.

Action Taken: Rock Island Police and Campus Security were contacted, and RIPD checked for latent prints.

PLEASE NOTE that as we approach the end of the school year the theft of student property typically increases. Please take extra care to lock your room or house doors when you are absent, and keep room windows closed when asleep or not present.
