2009 Season - Early Coe goal holds up in men's soccer
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coe’s Jacob Johnson scored 16½ minutes in to give the Coe soccer team a 1-0 win over Augustana Tuesday at Ericson Field. Another tough luck loss drops the Vikings to 3-6 on the season.
After a first half that saw each team manage just two shots apiece, the action picked up in the second half, if not the scoring. Coe got off seven shots in the second period while Augustana fired six. The Vikings had the two best scoring opportunities of the period however. First, Augustana’s Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) took a beautiful feed from Alex Bennett (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) at the 75-minute mark and scored on the header. Unfortunately, Love was offside on the play and the goal waved off.
The Vikings’ other golden opportunity came with 1:22 left when Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was pulled down in the box by a Kohawk defender. However, Coe’s Grady Brown made the save on John Linden’s (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) penalty kick and the Augustana never mounted another serious threat.
The Vikings will attempt to break a three-game losing streak when they travel to Wheaton on October 7 to take on the Thunder in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
