A letter to the editor which Dan Lee co-authored with Dr. Lisa Brothers Arbisser is included in the current issue of The Hastings Center Report, which is the flagship medical ethics journal in this country. Their letter is a response to an article by Franklin G. Miller and Robert D. Truog entitled "Rethinking the Ethics of Vital Organ Donation."
Norm Moline, Hamming Professor of Geography, wrote by invitation the lead article in the May-June issue of the Journal of Geography (the journal of the National Council for Geographic Education) which has the special focus on geography, geographers and study abroad. The article is entitled: "International Studies Become Pilgrimages: Geography in a Multi-discipline Overseas Program." By describing in considerable detail our East Asia International Term which has existed since 1974 as the case example, he develops the idea that our programs become pilgrimages in the context set forth by Cousineau in The Art of Pilgrimage that a pilgrimage is "any journey with the purpose of finding something that matters deeply to the traveler" and that "the purpose of the pilgrimage is to make life more meaningful." The article also includes a short section on some similarities and linkages between college study programs and the growing field of "cultural tourism". He concludes with these words: "The cumulative impact of the many different experiences has helped students see the world in new ways and given more meaning to the context of their lives. We have helped them become more than routine travelers; we have helped them become pilgrims on this trip...and hopefully for life."
The second article in this same issue is by Brad Jokisch, graduate of Augustana's Geography program, who now teaches at Ohio University. He was on Augustana's Latin America term and has benefitted from the mentoring and example of Charlie Mahaffey (Geography) and Tom Brown (History).
