2009 Season - Second half goals key win over Millikin

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s soccer team continued its winning ways Saturday, shaking off a sub-par first half to post a 2-1 win over Millikin. With the win the Vikings improve to 8-0 on the year and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Millikin’s Brittany Rohling put the Big Blue on top early when she took advantage of some Augustana defensive confusion in the goal mouth following a corner kick to get her third goal of the season. That score, just over three minutes in, was only the second goal allowed by Augustana this season. After getting very little going early in the game, the Vikings gradually put together more scoring threats as the half went on. However, they were unable to put a score on the board and despite outshooting Millikin 5-2, the teams went to halftime with the Big Blue leading, 1-0.

In the second half, Augustana continued to put the pressure on and just less than 10 minutes into the second period, Erin Coulson (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) took a nice feed from Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) to knot the score with her fifth goal of the season. Five minutes later, Coulson scored again, this time off a pass from Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) to give the Vikings a lead they’d not relinquish.

The Vikings survived several late Millikin charges and ended up outshooting the Big Blue for the game, 10-6. Millikin falls to 6-3 overall on the season after losing its CCIW opener. Augustana is back in action on Tuesday, September 29, at Ericson Field when it takes on Coe at 5:00 p.m.
