2009 Season - Four wins net Grinnell volleyball title

Led by the all-tournament performances of junior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.), Augustana won the Grinnell Triangular tournament over the weekend. The Vikings of second year head coach Janelle Hester won four straight matches to take the team title with a perfect 4-0 record.

Augustana volleyball team got back on the winning track on Friday, winning a pair of matches. In the first match, the Vikings handled William Penn by scores of 25-27, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22. In the second match Augustana handed the hosts a four-game setback, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-16. The success continued for Hester's crew on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-22; 25-13; 25-23) victory over Grinnell followed by a 3-0 (25-23; 25-23; 25-22) win against William Penn.
Jungnickel and Skeens were named to the all-tournament team.

Jungnickel played in 14 games and ended up with 72 kills for the tournament, an average of 5.14 per game. She also had 17 service aces with 69 digs, an average of 4.93 per game. Skeens also played in 14 games in the tournament and she had 33 kills for a 2.36 average. She had a total of 14 blocks (five solo and nine assists).

The four wins move the Vikings' record to 6-11 on the year. Augustana is back in action on Tuesday, September 29 with a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match at Wheaton. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

AUGUSTANA 3, WILLIAM PENN 1 (25-27; 25-21; 25-23; 25-22) on Friday, September 25
The Vikings bounced back nicely from a tough 25-27 defeat in the first set and won three close ones (25-21; 25-23; 25-22) to defeat William Penn in the opening round of the Grinnell Triangular on Friday, September 25 in Grinnell, Iowa. Jungnickel was nearly unstoppable as she pounded out 20 kills with just six errors in 48 attempts. She also had 32 digs and two service aces. Skeens had 11 kills with one error in 30 attempts and five blocks (two solo and three assists). Senior Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) was also in double digits in kills with 11 and had 24 digs. Junior Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) added eight kills. Junior setter Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) notched 45 assists and freshman Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) added 29 digs.

AUGUSTANA 3, GRINNELL 1 (25-18; 19-25; 25-19; 25-16) on Friday, September 25
Once again, Jungnickel led the way as she had 19 kills and the Vikings beat Grinnell 3-1 in the second round of the Grinnell Triangular on Friday, September 25. She had six errors in 44 attempts and added seven service aces with 14 digs. Thelander put down nine kills and Skeens had six. Bailey picked up 36 assists and Slick had 14 digs.

AUGUSTANA 3, GRINNELL 0 (25-23; 25-22; 25-13) on Saturday, September 26
With Jungnickel getting 15 kills and Thelander 12, the Vikings made short work of Grinnell on the second day of the Grinnell Triangular. Augustana won 3-0 by scores of 25-23; 25-22 and 25-13). Jungnickel had 11 digs and six service aces. Bailey notched 24 assists.

AUGUSTANA 3, WILLIAM PENN 0 (25-23; 25-23; 25-22) on Saturday, September 26
Wins in three close sets (25-23; 25-23; 25-22) put the finishing touches on a perfect tournament for Augustana at the Grinnell Triangular. The Vikings went 4-0 to win the title and once again Jungnickel was at the forefront. She had 18 kills, 12 digs and two service aces. Skeens and Thelander each had nine kills and Bailey picked up 36 assists. Senior Rachel Uhrig (Wheaton North HS, Winfield, Ill.) had 11 digs.
