2009-2010 Season - Vikings fall 5-4 to St. Ambrose
DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Augustana women’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 match to St. Ambrose on Wednesday, September 23 in Davenport, Iowa. The Vikings battled back from a 2-1 deficit after doubles and again from a 4-2 deficit in singles before the Queen Bees finally won the match. The Blue & Gold are now 5-8 overall this season.
Sophomores Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) and Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored the first point of the evening for the Vikings with an (8-5) win at No. 3 doubles against Emily Anderson and Mary Nodland. St. Ambrose won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to grab the lead heading into singles play.
Junior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) quickly tied the match up at 2-2 as she cruised to a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Anderson at No. 4 singles. The Queen Bees went back in front when Amanda Gomez knocked off Augustana’s senior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) at No. 1 singles by a (6-2, 7-5) score. The lead grew when St. Ambrose’s Rachel Sarafin defeated senior Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) by a (6-1, 5-7, (10-7)) score at No. 2 singles. Crawford battled back from a 6-1, 4-1 deficit before dropping the match.
Trailing 4-2 and needing to win all three of the remaining matches, Augustana started to work its way back when senior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) gutted out a (6-3, 7-5) win over Jenelle Bayer at No. 3 singles. Doemland rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set, winning the final five games to close out the match. Freshman Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) quickly followed with a (6-3, 6-2) victory over Melanie Blazevic at No. 6 singles. With the match deadlocked at 4-4, sophomore Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) went back and forth with Nodland at No. 5 singles before falling (6-4, 4-6, (10-8)).
