2009 Season - Vikings defeat Carthage 5-1
KENOSHA, Wis. – The season long shutout streak finally came to an end for the Augustana women’s soccer team, but the Vikings remained undefeated after a 5-1 victory over Carthage on Saturday, September 19 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Blue & Gold improve to 6-0 overall and are now 1-0 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
Sophomore Erin Coulson (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) put Augustana out in front at the 13:45 mark, scoring on a rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Vikings kept up the pressure and scored again when sophomore Caitlin Winkelman (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) tallied a goal at the 21:40 mark to make it 2-0. Sophomore Ashley Higuchi (Smoky Hill HS, Aurora, Colo.) quickly added a third goal for the Blue & Gold, scoring at the 23:10 mark. Augustana finally allowed its first goal of the season as Carthage’s Michelle Sobey scored at the 43:05 mark. The Vikings outshot the Lady Reds 13-5 and led 3-1 at intermission.
The game remained 3-1 throughout much of the second half before the Vikings added a pair of late insurance goals to earn the 5-1 road win. Senior Amanda Bucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) scored her first goal of the year at the 80:22 mark and senior Katie Oakes (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) did the same with a goal at the 83:48 mark to complete the scoring. Senior Lauren Polock (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was credited with an assist on Oakes’ goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Radloff (West Chicago HS, West Chicago, Ill.) made two saves in the first 45:50 of play and has only allowed one goal all season. Freshman Bridget McDermott (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) came on in relief and made three saves in a scoreless half of work.
