2009 Season - Vikings win CCIW opener over Carthage
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana Viking men’s soccer team opened the CCIW portion of the 2009 season in fine style Saturday afternoon at Ericson Field, taking a 2-1 decision from the Carthage Red Men.
The Vikings took advantage of a Carthage foul to jump ahead 14 minutes in. The Vikings’ John Linden (Fremd HS, Libertyville, Ill.) scored on the direct free kick from about 25 yards out to give Augustana a 1-0 lead. The goal was Linden’s second of the year. Carthage answered back less than four minutes later when Andrew Gamarra scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Drew Liogas, evening the score at 1-1. The score remained at 1-1 as the two teams went to the halftime break.
Just over nine minutes into the second period, Augustana’s Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) gained possession in Carthage territory and weaved through several Red Men defenders before beating Carthage goalkeeper Taao Scarnato with the go-ahead goal.
Solid Viking defense kept the Red Men from any serious scoring threats over the final 35 minutes and Augustana came away with the 2-1 win. Augustana outshot Carthage 12-9 and Viking goalkeeper Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) evened his record at 3-3 while recording six saves in the match.
The win moves Augustana’s record to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in CCIW play while Carthage drops to 1-3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Vikings are back in action Wednesday, September 23 against Loras in Dubuque, Iowa. Game time for that match is 8:00 p.m.
