2009 Season - Young Vikings take seventh at Illinois Intercollegiates

NORMAL, Illinois – With four freshmen in the top seven, Augustana placed seventh in the college division of the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, September 18 in Normal, Illinois. The meet, which was run on the Illinois State University Golf Course, had 24 teams in the college division and 31 squads overall. Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team scored 177 points to place seventh in the college division and totaled 351 points and placed 14th in the overall meet (including the NCAA Division I schools).

The University of Chicago won the meet with 60 points while North Central was second with 79 and Rend Lake took third with 109. St. Xavier (117), Illinois Wesleyan (119), Olivet Nazarene (158) placed ahead of Augustana. Rounding out the top 10 was Elmhurst (186), Greenville (219) and Illinois Central (248).

Freshman Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) was the top finisher for Augustana as she placed 23rd with a time of 19:24. Junior Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.) was the second finisher for the Vikings, taking 26th in 19:31. Freshman Tara Bistry (Joliet Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) placed 31st in 19:35 and another freshman, Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) was 50th in 20:00. Still another of Whiteside’s first year class, Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) was 54th in 20:06 and senior Krystal Damiano (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) took 56th in 20:08. Senior Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) placed 79th in 20:32.

Augustana will compete in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Friday, September 25 at Credit Island Park in Davenport, Iowa.
