2009 Season - Undefeated, unscored upon and ranked sixth

After cruising through the first five matches of the season with a perfect record, the Augustana women’s soccer team has moved to sixth in the NCAA Division III Central Rankings. The announcement was made today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Veteran head coach Scott Mejia’s team has yet to allow a goal this season, having outscored opponents 17-0.

Last week the Vikings defeated Greenville at home by a score of 6-0 on September 8 and then went on the road and picked up a pair of victories over the weekend. Augustana beat Wisconsin-Stout 3-0 on Friday, September 12 and scored a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Saturday, September 13. Earlier this year Mejia’s team defeated Edgewood 3-0 on September 1 and Dominican 4-0 on September 6.

Two teams that will be on the Vikings schedule later in the year hold down the number one and two spots in the Central Region. Wheaton, currently 4-1 is the top team while Illinois Wesleyan, 3-0-2, is second. Augustana will host Wheaton at 7:00 p.m. on October 14 and will play at Illinois Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m. on October 24.

Mejia is in his ninth season at the helm of the Augustana women’s soccer program. He led the Vikings to NCAA Division III tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006. Last year he guided the team to a 15-3-0 overall record. His career coaching record at Augustana is an impressive 109-44-10.
