2009-2010 Season - Vikings sweep Knox 9-0
GALESBURG, Ill. – After a tough weekend, the Augustana women’s tennis team got back on track with a 9-0 victory over Knox on Tuesday, September 15 in Galesburg, Illinois. Eight different Vikings tallied wins over the Prairie Fire as the Blue & Gold improved to 5-5 overall. Augustana remains 2-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
Seniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) were (8-1) winners at No. 1 doubles, defeating Megan Funk and Jordan Kuban. Sophomores Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) paired together for an (8-2) victory over Aimee Neilan and Emily Tyl at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and junior Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) pulled out an (8-6) victory at No. 2 doubles against Katie Beadling and Rachel Clark to complete the doubles sweep for Augustana.
Richardson cruised to a (6-0, 6-0) win over Funk at No. 1 singles and Crawford picked up a victory with a (6-1, 6-2) decision against Kuban at No. 2 singles. Reece won (6-3, 6-1) over Beadling at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) notched a decisive (6-1, 6-1) victory at No. 6 singles against Sarah Bolitho. The final two matches went to third set super tie-breakers and the Vikings earned wins in both of them. Panko rallied from a one set deficit to defeat Clark (4-6, 6-1, (10-8)) at No. 4 singles. Freshman Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) played the longest match of the evening and pulled out a (6-3, 6-7 (2), (10-5)) win over Ginny Graves at No. 5 singles. Both freshmen are now 2-0 on the season in third set super tie-breakers.
