2009 Season - Jungnickel wins honors at UW-Oshkosh

Led by the all-tournament performance from junior outside hitter Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.), Augustana picked up its first two victories of the 2009 volleyball season. The Vikings split four matches at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Tournament in Oshkosh, Wisconsin over the weekend of September 11-12. Second year head coach Janelle Hester’s team defeated Carroll 3-0 (25-17; 25-22; 25-19) on Friday, September 11 in the first round of competition. In the second round the Vikings fell to Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3-0 (25-20; 25-18; 25-20). They bounced back nicely on the second day with a 3-1 win over Lake Forest (25-19; 21-25; 25-20; 25-23) followed by a narrow 3-2 loss to Lakeland (25-18; 17-25; 16-25; 25-12; 13-15).

Jungnickel was selected to the all-tournament team for her effort. She played in 15 games and pounded out 63 kills in 171 total attempts for a .193 kill percentage. For the tournament she averaged 4.20 kills per game. She added 46 digs with seven solo blocks and six assisted blocks while serving up five aces.

The Vikings are now 2-8 overall and will open College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play with a home match against Millikin on Tuesday, September 15 in the Carver Center.

AUGUSTANA 3, CARROLL 0 (25-17; 25-22; 25-19) on September 11 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) ripped off 16 kills and had eight digs to help lead the Vikings to their first victory of the season by a 3-0 margin against Carroll. Augustana won games by scores of 25-17; 25-22; 25-19. Jungnickel also had three solo blocks, four assisted blocks and one service ace. She only had two attack errors in the match. Freshman Casey Komel (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.)  and junior Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) each had six kills and junior Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) added five. Freshman Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the team with 14 digs while junior Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had 29 setting assists.

WISCONSIN-OSHKOSH 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-20; 25-18; 25-20) on September 11 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had 13 kills, which was nearly half of her team’s total of 28 as the Vikings fell to the Titans 3-0 in the second round of the UW-Oshkosh Tournament. Jungnickel had nine digs, two assisted blocks and one solo block. Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) had six kills and Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) picked up five. Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) was credited with 28 assists and Shanon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) was the team leader in digs with 19.

AUGUSTANA 3, LAKE FOREST 1 (25-19; 21-25; 25-20; 25-23) on September 12 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Three players were in double figures in the kill department as Augustana defeated Lake Forest 3-1 for its second victory of the season. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had 18 kills and 13 digs while Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) picked up 11 kills with 10 digs. Casey Komel (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was the third player in double digits in kills with 10. Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had 22 setting assists while freshman Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 15. Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) picked up 28 digs.

LAKELAND 3, AUGUSTANA 2 (25-18; 17-25; 16-25; 25-12; 13-15) on September 12 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
The Vikings fell to Lakeland 3-2 in the final match of the UW-Oshkosh Tournament. They won game one 25-18 and dropped the second and third games by scores of 25-17 and 25-16 before bouncing back with a 25-12 win in the fourth game. Lakeland won the decisive fifth game by a count of 15-13. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had 16 kills and 16 digs. Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) added eight kills and Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had seven. Sophomore Nicole Jones (Yorkville HS, Yorkville, Ill.), in her first appreciable varsity action, had 22 setting assists. Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had 18 assists. Shannon Slick (Rockton Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.) led the team in digs with 17.
