2009-2010 Season - Hargrave named assistant for tennis program

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Brent Hargrave has been named the assistant coach for the Augustana tennis program for the 2009-10 season.  Hargrave, a 2006 graduate of St. Ambrose University, will work alongside head coach Adam Strand with both the men’s and women’s teams.

“Brent brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the Augustana tennis program,” said Strand, who is in his fifth year with the men’s team and fourth year with the women.  He is motivated to excel in his position and has a wealth of knowledge having played at the high school and collegiate level.  He has already been a tremendous help in his first few weeks with our women’s team, and I think he will add a lot to our men’s team as well.  I am pleased to have him on board, and our players are happy to have another coach who can help them during the season.”

Hargrave played high school tennis at Moline High School and was a member of four Western Big Six Conference Team Champions.  He also won No. 1 doubles crowns as a sophomore and junior and earned the No. 1 singles title as a senior.  Hargrave was a three year state qualifier, finishing 17th – 24th out of 128 teams as a junior in doubles alongside Drew Forsberg.  The former Maroon also placed in the Top 24 as a senior in the 128 player draw.

After graduating from Moline in 2001, he continued his career at Lakeland College in Mattoon, Illinois and helped the team qualify to the national tournament in both of his seasons.  As a sophomore, Hargrave advanced to the quarterfinals of the individual national tournament in doubles.  He moved on to St. Ambrose after his two years at Lakeland and played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Fighting Bees in his final two seasons.

Augustana’s new assistant is also a well known player in the Quad Cities.  He won the Pleasant Valley singles tournament this past summer and is also a past doubles champion at the Bettendorf Open.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to work with the Augustana tennis program,” said Hargrave.  “It is great to see the women improving every day and working hard.  I am also looking forward to working with the men’s team and helping them to continue to get better throughout the year.”

Brent is the son of Jeff and Susan Hargrave of Coal Valley, Illinois.  Jeff is a 1970 Augustana graduate and was a four year varsity letterwinner for the Vikings.
