2009 Season - Volleyball falls to ranked teams

Victories were hard to come by at the Washington Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri on September 4-5 for the Augustana volleyball team. Second year head coach Janelle Hester’s team played two teams ranked in the top 25 of the first NCAA Division III poll among the four matches over the weekend.

The Vikings fell to unranked Millikin in a tough 3-2 decision on Friday, September 4 in the first match of the tournament. Millikin won the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores before Augustana won game three 25-18 and game four 25-23. In the decisive fifth game the Big Blue won 15-13. In the second game on Friday the Vikings fell to 22nd ranked Hope by a score of 3-0 with the Dutch winning by scores of 25-15; 25-14; 25-20. During the second day of competition Hester’s team lost 3-1 to Webster. The Gorloks won a scintillating first game by a score of 27-25 and took game two 25-22.

Augustana bounced back with a 25-19 victory in game three before falling 25-22 in the fourth game. In the final match of the tournament, fourth ranked Washington defeated the Vikings 3-0, winning by scores of 25-9; 25-17 and 25-18.

MATCH STORIES

Millikin 3, Augustana 2 (25-20; 25-20; 18-25; 23-25; 15-13)
Three players finished in double digits in kills but it was not enough as the Vikings dropped a tough five set match to College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foe Millikin. Junior Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led the team with 16 kills and she also had a team high 18 digs with two service aces. Freshman Allyson Martinez (Air Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) each contributed 11 kills. Martinez had two setting assists and one dig while Loncar added 12 digs, one setting assist and one service ace. Sophomore Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had nine kills and three service aces. Junior Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) led the team in assists with 40.

Hope 3, Augustana 0 (25-15; 25-15; 25-20)
The 22nd rated Dutch rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Vikings in the second round of the Washington Tournament. Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) had seven kills to lead the way and Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) picked up six.  Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) had 13 assists.

Webster 3, Augustana 1 (27-25; 25-22; 19-25; 25-22)
After losing a tough 27-25 decision in the first set, Augustana eventually dropped a 3-1 decision to the Gorlocks. Game two went to Webster by a score of 25-22 before the Vikings picked up a 25-19 win in the third set. Webster scored a 25-22 clincher in the fourth set to close out the match. Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career high 13 kills in the match with a service ace and a solo block. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) each had 10 kills. Jungnickel had 26 digs as did freshman Shannon Slick (Hononegah HS, Roscoe, Ill.). Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) picked up 21 assists and Kelsey Mikula (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) had 17.

Washington 3, Augustana 0 (25-9; 25-17; 25-18)
Washington proved its number four national ranking by winning in three sets. Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) picked up 10 kills to lead the way and Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) added four. Allison Bailey (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) picked up 10 assists.
