2009-2010 Season - Vikings split CCIW double header

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Augustana women’s team took to the road for the first time in regular season play and came away with a split of its first two College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin matches of the season on Saturday, September 5 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The Vikings fell 7-2 to Carthage, currently ranked No. 14 in the Central Region, but rebounded with an 8-1 victory against Elmhurst.  The Blue & Gold are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW.

Senior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and sophomore Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) teamed together for an (8-1) victory at No. 3 doubles against Ashley Morgan and Amanda Bizub to put the Vikings on the board against the Lady Reds.  Freshman Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) later defeated Bizub (6-4, 6-3) at No. 6 singles to secure Augustana’s second victory of the match.

Doemland and junior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) each went to three sets before falling in singles play.  Doemland won the first set at No. 3 singles against Kristin Naidicz, but dropped a (6-7 (3), 6-2, (10-6)) decision.  Sapio also won her first set, but lost (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) to Morgan at No. 4 singles.

The Vikings won two of the three doubles matches against the Bluejays and then pulled away in singles, sweeping all six matches in straight sets.  Doemland and Panko beat Donna McKinney and Blair Hufford (8-2) at No. 2 doubles.  Sapio and junior Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) pulled away for an (8-3) win at No. 3 doubles over Stephanie Ruff and Emily Tarlini.  Seniors Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and Tricia Crawford (Decorah HS, Decorah, Iowa) fought off multiple match points before losing (8-4) to Virginia Dallman and Shannon Dale at No. 1 doubles.

Leading 2-1, Augustana put together its best display of tennis so far this season to earn an 8-1 victory.  Richardson and Crawford led the way with convincing victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.  Richardson defeated Dallman (6-1, 6-3) at No. 1 singles and Crawford won (6-1, 6-2) against Dallman at No. 2 singles.  Doemland earned a (6-2, 6-3) decision over Ruff at No. 3 singles and Sapio cruised past McKinney (6-1, 6-1) at No. 4 singles.  Reece won (6-3, 6-1) against Hufford at No. 5 singles and Panko picked up a (6-2, 6-2) victory against Alexis Ross at No. 6 singles.
